Hi, intending to go Australia with a fren in 1st wk of Nov. Thought of Tasmanian n Sydney though nt comfirmed. Where can I go for Hot air balloon n sky gliding? Playtpus in Tasmanian. We wanted free n easy but not good at travelling on our own. Any tips? I checked out loneyplanet website upon fren's advice but nt sure what they are. I've been to Switzerland but didn't like the touch-and-go iternary. How is the weather like in Tasmanian n Sydney in beginning of Nov? What about Melbourne n other places? Any other recommendation. A great Hang gliding place and school is located at Stanwell Park (Southern Coast) accessible by Train from Sydney, take a look at their website: www.hanggliding.com.au.
Also, Balloon flights are quite common in Sydney. www.hotairballoonrides.com.au is a tool that compares many of the operators and prices.
In Tasmania, there are many national parks with wildlife to explore, but often the animals are quite hard to spot.
www.parks.tas.gov.au
(Melbourne has a great zoo that you'd be able to check out many Australian animals up close: www.zoo.org.au)
If you're up for beaches and surfing, rent a car and take a leisurely drive up the New South Wales central coast to Port Macquarie (About 300km), or even further to Queensland's Gold Coast (About 900km) north of Sydney. (Make sure if you want to drive, brush up on Australian Road rules before you come. Also be aware like only 18 other countries, we drive on the left side of the road.)
Tasmania, the Island State, is quite cool all year round. in November, you're likley to reach 15 - 17c in the northern parts of the state. And in Sydney you're likley to have the complete opposite, Sydney can get very warm during November, up to 30 - 32c.
Pack light clothes (T-shirts, polos and Shorts) bring some warm clothes though, it has been known to be quite cold around that time of year.
Hope this helps |

There are plently of hot air ballons in Victoria's Yarra Valley and are always going over the city of Melbourne as well. You can check them out at http://www.hotairballooning.com.au/
As for the animals it is pretty rare to see them wandering around in the wild. I went to Tasmania for two weeks, I drove around the state and didn't really see any wildlife. I know in melbourne the dandenong ranges have walks I have been on and seen wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, echidna's and many different birds, but it all depends on your timing and where you go. If you want to see the animals up close in a zoo there are places such as Healseville sanctuary which is just Australian wildlife.
Weather in November is generally around the 20's with some hot days, as it is the end of spring. Tasmania is much cooler than Sydney, especially in around the mountains which makes up most of the western side of the state, the eastern side isn't very interesting, it seems to be all dried out and padocks. There are good rafting trips and stuff there which I personally want to do, some are listed here : http://www.tasmanianexpeditions.com.au/
The blue mountains in New south Wales are also great for camping and bush walking.
I guess the only other way to find out good things is to just google
Hope you enjoy your trip |

Platypus? Yeah.. if you can see them! (and it's TASMANIA, by the way) You need to be somewhere near fresh water and very very VERY quiet and wayyyyy away from urban areas to see them - IF you are lucky.
But don't let that put you off. There are soooo many wonderful and unique animals and places to see. |

If you like it hot - Cairns in the far north Queensland is great at that time of year. Melbourne is not that good, 4 seasons in one day and all that. Hot air ballooning on the tablelands not far from the city ... great snorkelling/swimming on the Great Barrier Reef, huge lagoon on the esplanade in the heart of cairns and great shopping, tropical rainforests – heaps cheaper than Sydney/Melbourne etc, and a lot more to do – tourist wise! |

November is starting to get warm - hot. Maximum temperatures in the medium high 20s, into the 30C range around Sydney, less in Tasmania. It is not the best time for hot air balloons. But if any are operating regularly in Australia in November, it will be in Tasmania. OTOH, Tasmania is getting into the roaring forties latitudes and hot air balloons don't like wind.
Get the "Rough Guide" or "Lonely Planet" or maybe the Michelin guide to Australia. Someone mentioned Stanwell Park - famous for hang gliding. Sailplanes, there are many places where they launch but all tend to be well inland and well away from Sydney and other capitals. The only place I know for sure is the Taroom - Wandoan airstrip and that is in central Queensland - a very long way from Sydney.
Platypus - they are hard to see. I have had one pointed out to me but I did not recognise anything. They are not very big. |
