The are a pest, especially on the roads, believe me they make a big dent in your vehicle if you hit one, most four wheel drives have roo bars on the front for protection.

You can buy kangaroo meat in the supermarkets, mince and steaks, apparently it's really nice but I choose not to eat a National icon. My man loves roo meat, but then again he is Aboriginal !

The Aboriginals hunt them for meals, but that is way 'outback', generally these days you need a permit to shoot and kill them.

- Landowners can obtain a Destruction Permit for a protected animal that is causing damage to crops or other property eg kangaroos and wombats
- Also get a permit for 'Commercial kangaroo shooting'.

Restaurants in Australia on the menu is Crocodile and Kangaroo, the tail part is the nicest.

kangaroo fur and (ahem other parts) are made into Souvenirs. eg - Scrotum Pouch, Kangaroo Paw Back Scratcher, Purses, Belts, Cushion Covers etc

We eat a lot of roo here, I know of several shops here in Adelaide that sell nothing else,

Cute but tourist parks they cull the males, they attack can without warning, can be very aggressive, they can and have killed.

It is eaten here and available at most supermarkets, butchers, etc but you cannot just go out and hunt one yourself to eat!!! There are way too many possible diseases from the wild ones ...

yes but there are strict guidelines you must follow and you have to be accredited to hunt and kill them for human consumption and they have to go to a specialised meat works to get processed

They are pest out western Queensland i have seen hundreds of them at night when i went out one night with a professional roo shooter and i have seen them nearly eat out a whole crop of wheat

Skippy for dinner.. yum.

yes, it is eaten as much as Americans eat venison I suppose. There is much better game and food in Australia PS...It didn't taste like chicken!

Wish someone would hunt and eat the ones on my golf course, they are like the galahs that chew the crap out of the roots of the grass, other than that, they are ok until they get spooked by something and they start hopping all over the place, looks like something out of a movie, when that happens.

Kevin
It is usually sold at the shops or in some restaurants, but I don't know anyone who actually hunts or eats them on a regular basis. I've eaten roo meat once, and it was nice.

more of a pest than food some kill them just to stop them eating food that is needed for livestock
you can buy roo in most supermarkets

wotzthepoint?
I grew up with roo as a staple of my diet and hunting roo was a perfectly acceptable past time. Roo steak is healthy with less fat than beef, but like any game its an acquired taste.
A big roo stew (lots of tomatoes) and damper on a cold night out camping...hmmmm yum!

Its just when they jump in front of your car there are problems.
Can cause a hell of a lot of damage. That and making them angry when they are way too close to you. Those claws on their hind feet can disembowel a dog and seriously hurt a human. They can be pretty intimidating when up close and personal. Funniest thing I saw was a guy get too close and ended up in a headlock having the stuffing pummelled out of him.

You can buy kangaroo in the supermarket. It is usually minced and is very cheap. Some butchers sell kangaroo steaks which are often marinated. Most of the kangaroo is used in pet food.

No, its not a common thing, you might find a tiny bit of Kangaroo down at the dogs meat end of the freezer in the Super market.......but its not eaten much here!

Well actually they aren't the biggest pest, they belong here,
it's people, domestic animals and livestock that are the real pests.

We've taken the land that belongs to the Indigenous Australians and to the native animals.

It distresses me very much to have my fellow Australians show such disrespect and disregard to a creature that BELONGS HERE !

Re food. I guess eating a kangaroo is no more disrespectful than eating any other poor animal. It is in most of the supermarkets in limited quantities, and some people swear by it, including my best friend who is French and thinks it's wonderful. I have smelled it and it smells really strong and rank. I wouldn't recommend it.

I used to work as a Jillaroo, a major part of my job was killing enough feral wild pigs to feed over 30 station dogs. That meant hunting them down using pig dogs, shooting them or decapitating them with a machete (the dogs held them down by the ears), and hacking them up. I also shot some kangaroos. Brutal stuff.I didn't have much of a conscience back then, being young and stupid, but killing those roos really made me stop and think, and it changed who I am, for the better. I can't take it back but there it is.

Re modern day culling, sometimes it must be done for reasons of conservation if food is scarce and numbers are too high. It is true that they can be aggressive, but then so can we and we've got less reason to be.

People, you've got to eat and sometimes culls are necessary, but please.. a little respect wouldn't go astray !.

jade=)
well people only eat kangaroo to say they've eaten kangaroo before
