Australian vs British accent?

Ok, so why does the australian accent sound different from the British accent, if Australians originally came from Britain?

Someone told me it was because there were toxins in the air, and it altered something in their brain and made them speak in a different manner, and over time they evolved to sound the way they do now...

which I highly doubt is true, because it sounds pretty far fetched.

anyways, does anybody know why?

hahaha you guys are hilarious :D

I wish I could choose more than one best answer

and the whole "different dialects of the british accent" thing sounds waayyy more believable :)

Firstly in Britain... there are many many different accents.. dialects can change in a matter of kilometres...
so when the europeans first came to settle in australia you had a small number of people with MANY different UK accents.. you might have welsh , Irish. scottish for a start .. and then breakdowns within those..
so the small group of people picked up each others inflections ( think that's the right word).. and that's one reason why we sound different....

There is one thing I'll add... I grew up in a farming area of N.S.W and many of the people have an interesting manner of speech... They talk with their teeth clenched BUT moving their lips... and my theory on that is so that they wouldn't swallow too many of the little black bush flies that are all through the area...sounds silly .. but if you've ever been to the area .. you will know what I mean :)

Yeah, it's because there are toxins in the air..

We have to wear gas masks between certain hours of the day, but long term exposure has altered our speaking patterns and accents.

i don't think toxins in the air would have caused the difference in the accent, just the isolation from great britain would have caused the australians to come up with their own form of speech
but there are a lot of similarities depending on from what region of britain a person is from.

Ok, so why does the AMERCAN accent sound different from the British accent, if AMERICANS originally came from Britain?

For a start there's dozens of different British accents.

English like all germanic languages is open to local variations, accents and dialects.

Hahaa, it's got nothing to do with toxins. Our accent differs because of riding in kangaroo pouches for so long...it's all that boing boing boing action, hee hee...

It's because the convicts who were transported to Australia, sometimes for crimes as petty as stealing bread, were locked in the hold for much of the journey.
When they arrived in beautiful Botany Bay they were brought on deck and saw a strange bright light in the sky. Remember, they were from England and had never seen bright sunlight before.
Now, you try talking English with your face all screwed up against the sun.
After a couple of hundred years, the descendants of the convicts give thanks that their ancestors were sent to this beautiful and bountiful country.

Supernatural Freak
no it's not because of the toxins lol

its probaby because we live in different countries and have created our own accents.

i'm not quite sure.... good question (:

You could ask the same question about many countries in the world that were colonised by the British.
Just for example the USA and India.

Our accent has nothing to do with toxins in the air.

As Jenny said, our accent is basically just a mix of different accents evolved into the Australian accent.

Unless you know what causes every accent, the British, the American, etc.. that's probably as far as you can answer that. Obviously something causes us to all talk different.
