Australians: Do you really look down on asian people?

I have been always convinced that you think you and us are equal, but recently several things happened and made me doubt what your real opinion is. I know generally you are very nice, and you'd like to behave so before everyone. I'd like to know what you truly think. Please tell me. Thank you in advance.

I don't look down on anybody, I believe we are all equal.

Firstly, Australia is really a part of Asia because of our location - our international trade, migration and tourism are mostly with other places in Asia. Secondly, many many Australian citizens have an Asian background. Thirdly, Australia is definitely the most racially integrated and tolerant place that I have ever been to. (eg. When I lived in Japan, not only would they not rent an apartment to a foreigner but real estate agents wouldn't even let us foreigners into their shops)

Who is "us" in your question ? Surely you do not think that Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese (etc) people are the same ? You are being racist by asking what aussies think about 'us'.

If I am forced to generalize about the entire rest of asia - I would say that in comparison, Australians are more environmentally aware, more political, less materialistic and more thoughtful. Wheras asians might tend to be more focused on money, more superficial and less physical.

What do you mean by equal ? Everyone is equal under the law here - you cannot say that asians are treated differently than "aussies". Now particular people may have particular opinions - but that is their right - as long as they are not breaking the law.

Did anyone ever stand up and move because you sat next to them on the train ? (that happened to me everyday in Japan)
Did anyone charge you more in a shop because you were a different ethnic background ? (that happened to me every day in China)
Did anyone want to kill you just because you were a different religion ? ( Bali bombing was actually supported by many Indonesians)

I think everyone is jealous of people in some ways and feels superior to people in other ways. Perhaps equal but different might be the best way to describe it.......

It depends what part of Australian you are in, and with whom you are talking to. You will find some Australians are very racist indeed (ignorant redneck tpe). Others are more open. It is entirely subjective.

It's like that all over the world.
I think the same happens to us when we go to an Asian country.
All they want is our bucks.

I'm very sorry that you have recently had bad experiences that have caused you to ask this question.

I can only speak for myself and my wide circle of friends and acquaintances (several of whom are Asian from various backgrounds) and assure you that your being Asian would have no bearing whatsoever on our attitude to you. We all take people exactly as we find them. If we like and/or respect them and their abilities, it's because they deserve to be liked and respected. If we don't, it's because we have found that they don't deserve to be liked and/or respected regardless of whether they are Asian, multi-generation Australians of European extraction or of any other race or culture.

Completely apart from any question of racism, any Australian (and Asians can be Australian too you know) who automatically looks down on Asian people is stupid as well as racist. In our schools and workplaces, people of Asian extraction are among our brightest and best and our culture and economy would be very much poorer without them.

I find quite the opposite can be the case. When I went into a local Asian food mart and asked for a certain product, I was quickly though subtly manoeuvred out of the store when the counter assistant couldn't understand a word of my English language request. I don't think I was rude. But I certainly thought they were. I didn't get what I wanted, and they didn't get a sale. I find people with heritages in the more populous Asian countries to be pushy, queue jumpers and really rude on the roads. I figure thats because you have to be that way to get the things you need or someone else beats you the punch in some places. Even so, does it really mean that people have to act with such self interest and discourtesy? This doesn't only happen in the Asian community of course, but I do notice the ones that cut me off on the street without hesitation the most (I cycle a lot). It always seems to be one group that thinks it owns the roads and has the right to do whatever they want on them (like ignoring road rules).

Just to put this in context, I live on the Upper North Shore of Sydney. There are no paupers here. So there is no excuse for bad manners I believe. By the way, I grew up in remote North Western Australia where there half the population seems to be of Asian extraction and are the nicest people I have met. So not everyone is that way I guess.

No, I think the locals (aussies) are cool. They love me and I do love them too. It makes me feel that Aussies or rather the caucasians are way friendlier and nicer and warm than that of in an Asia country!!!

Btw, u should see how they greet u, even though y'all don't know each other. Especially when I just arrived in Aus. I mean they are much much better than people in Asia...

Of course, don't expect something good in return if you look grumpy or so.

Aussies make my day... :)

I'm an Asian gurl. :)

Dot
I am Australian and I certainly don't.

I think there are good and people everywhere.

You just have to ignore the bad and look forward at the good.

I like you!

I am a migrant but consider my self an Aussie. So as a migrant I think that it is important for all of us to integrate and assimilate. In my view there is nothing worse than someone who lives here and ignores the Australian way of life.Personally,I do not think that Australians look down on other cultures. However,it is anoying if "migrants" don't boder to learn english and want to live by separte rules.I guess all cultures have something to offer and what really counts is whether you are a good person or not.

Ok. I don't look down on Asian people at all and neither do most of my friends/workmates ect but....I did live in a town about 2 hours from Brisbane for a few years and it saddens me to say a lot of people were racist but not just about Asians, they were against Abouriginals and African refugee's as well. Of course not everyone in that town was this way but there were def a lot of people. Most places I have lived are not like that though.

No I don't think the average ANGLO SAXON AUSSIE does look down on asians, Aussies may not be as forthcoming as other races buts that's because asians don't approuch Aussie in any way ecept only when you want a HAND OUT and because you guys do look down on us Aussies dont lie because its true.

You guys nether seem to smile and guys always nether come up to Australian to say g'day or hello.

I am not lieing in what I am saying no Asian has ever said g'day or hello to me in my whole life they just seem to be an emotionless sort of people.

Pledon't dont start calling me names. YOU know what I am saying is true.
