People from Melbourne on yahoo......

Sydney is the place for diversity, a harbour that is magical, ferry rides are awesome to get around, the best varitey of everything, food, clothes, and arts, beaches, theatre, and outside sydney a short drive away is the Blue mountains for a change, a beautiful national park, filled with mountains, mist, and adventure.
Forget canberra, Its where politicians live, and is the most boring place, although it has the national art gallery.

Melbourne, is called the city of parks? theres lots of great shopping, cafes and drinking coffee is the done thing, and no beaches...lots of culture, and rain daily. you get 4 seasons in one day there.

Then theres Bribane, But its a town in a desert, humid and little to offer a tourist, head for the great barrier reef, and the coast. Queensland is warmer, but its a great holiday experience, the gold coast is all theme parks...its geared for tourists.

Perth is awesome, freashest air ever, and great for the boaties with a great harbour. Its small though.

Sydney won the olympics, Sydney is the best and largest most diverse city in Australia. Bondi beach, 15 minutes from city, you can swim with fish and sometimes dolphins. There is everything a tourist could want. Im from Sydney :)

I echo Mr Smarty Pants comments...

I'm from WA but have travelled to all three. I LOVE Melbourne, I love the culture, the awesome little cafes and bars tucked away...

Canberra has a tonne of decent restaurants and cafes, but shopping, nightlife and stuff is otherwise somewhat limited. its there in quality but certainly not in quantity. 'fun' is not a word usually associated with Canberra.

Melbourne is famous for its shopping, so many awesome boutiques and shopping districts. you can even go on shopping tours which take you to the outlet and discount stores for some bargain hunting, or walking tours down the little alleys with local designers. I find Melbourne has more of a heartbeat, more of a welcoming buzz and vibe.

Sydney is interesting, its a big city, and still plenty shopping, nightlife and stuff, I just never felt the same appeal there. I just didn't warm to it as I did to Melbourne.

Either way make sure you schedule in some days off for outside of the city. If you choose Melbourne, spend a day driving through the Yarra Valley or one other lovely wine growing region. and spend 2 days out on the Great Ocean Road. If you choose sydney, probably drive north and head out the coast, or maybe head out to the blue mountains. post in the sydney forum for more ideas.

Sydney is a great city with the best restaurants in Australia (although Melbourne comes a close second) and great shopping. There is excellent shopping in Melbourne too particularly for leather goods. Canberra is much smaller than either Sydney or Melbourne and although it has many attractions, it doesn't really compete with the other two.

It really comes down to personal preference. Some will swear by Melbourne, others won't hear a bad word about Sydney. I have lived in both and had a great time in each but my personal preference is Sydney. Apart from anything else it has beaches, the Harbour and better weather.

err, haha forget canberra, that's out of the question. Sydney is great no doubt, but from what i've heard, melbourne has a better nightlife, shopping and stuff.

Sydney has aesthetics, Melbourne has culture.

Of the three you mention: Melbourne, easily. I live in WA but I've been to all three. Sydney is ok, there's a lot of things to see, but it's overcrowded and impersonal.
Canberra has some interesting things, but you'll get bored of it in no time. It's a very small city. It's where we keep our politicians.
Melbourne is great. There's so much shopping to be done, with great public transport to help you get around. The nightlife is as good as anywhere in Australia too. No matter what you're looking for, you'll find it, live bands, nightclubs or pubs. The people are really friendly there too, which you won't find so much in Sydney.
Have a good holiday

Anywhere but Canberra, trust me you don't want to go there, ti's where all the politicians live and nothing else!
I love Sydney having lived there but my vote would be Melbourne, it covers all pretty well.

If you like rain, go south to Melbourne. Snow, ice and the cold? then stop in Canberra. Sub tropical weather, great harbor? definitely Sydney.

Rose G
Sydney, melbourne is great too, but the weather is better in sydney

Rosie_0801
Melbourne. Canberra is a hole, and Sydney is too large and expensive.

B.J.C
In order of choice from best to worst in terms of shopping, nightlife and general fun I would go Melbourne> Sydney> Canberra. Melbourne and Sydney are both large cities with loads of stuff to do but Canberra cannot really be compared. Its where all the serious stuff happens (no fun). Melbourne would be your best go with the almost endless cosy little ally ways and narrow inner city streets full of tiny cafes and shops from music and exclusive clothes stores to the restraunts in China town. Yes Sydney has better weather, that cannot be denied but if you decide to come in summer then bad weather really isn't an issue in Melbourne. have fun
