Emmie - come on down! You'll be most welcome downunder.

The only time most Aussies get "cheesed off" with immigrants is when they come here for "a better life" and then start criticising & expecting us to change OUR way of life to accommodate them.

We really are a friendly bunch. We love our country passionately (tho we may not be as vocal or arrogant about it as some) and we treasure our lifestyle. The vast majority of us embrace multiculturalism and enjoy the rich diversity that immigrants bring to our lives, but we DO have a culture of our own, we are very, very proud of it and we DO object to it being criticised and compromised to suit newcomers.

Having said that - as a general rule, we think the poms are alright :-) Do the right thing by us, and don't you worry, we'll reciprocate!

Tuppenybitz - I hear what you're saying - but we ARE an underpopulated country. Discouraging good folks like Emmie is not going to solve anything. Emmie's just the kind of "new Aussie" we need :-)

Not really. It is the immigrants that come over and don't bother to learn our language and customs that annoy us. So many people move here and disagree with things and say that would never be allowed where they were. But so what?? Do I go to Iraq and expect Aussie girls to be walking down the street in a bikini? Of course not because they don't do that over there so we respect it.

England and Australia are so similar it doesn't really matter. Expect to get teased alot though, it's all a bit of fun but in the end Australia is just a better country in every facet and we like to remind you of that.

The figure is between 70,000 and 80,000 a year, not 400,000. Why should we be annoyed? We get immigrants from most countries and they bring with them cultural diversity making this a wonderful cosmopolitan country to live in.

come on down, bring some of that wet weather with you.

No, not at all. We welcome everyone, just so long as they respect this country and try to integrate and respect our culture.

West Aussie Chick
In my area of Perth WA there are many UK immigrants and I certainly don't have a problem with it. They are all lovely people (the ones I have met anyway) and there are even speciality UK stores where you can buy anything you want from the UK. Most supermarkets now have a UK section as well with all kinds of different yummy foods.

My son is in preschool and it seems that nearly a third of his class is made up of UK kids and he is best friends with a few of them.

So I really don't see the problem myself and although you do hear people mention it in a negative way every now and then, it's not the way I think.

Good luck on your move. I am sure you will love it here.

i live at coogee and in summer there are more poms than locals - it would be OK if they brought there money and manners - but the later they forget - pub fights on a Friday and Saturday are common - very ugly

Why should we. We have known for years the title colonials made Australia better then England. It is actually nice to know they have finally grown a brain and realise we are better (now watch the thumbs down :)

tuppenybitz
immigration should be stopped for awhile

we have enough problems without more people coming

FORKY
you sent us here to paradise, call us convicts, come here rich(with the exchange rate),bag us at every oportunity, think england still owns us and now you all want to move here and enjoy what we have known for ever-that Aussie is the best place on earth,YEAH I'm annoyed all you poms should be made to sign a declaration stating-ENGLAND is a grubby little $h!t hole with terrible weather and bad food, and from now on i will worship Vegemite and BBQ's plus i will throw away my framed photo of the Queen and her corgi's and replace it with an original pro Hart outback painting and I'll wear a cork hat while I'm in public so the Aussies know I'm trying to leave my past behind...........CHEERS!! :) enjoy your new home and welcome!

mariemlm

Emmie
Good on you for making that big decision. My hubby and I considered it as we are both nurses. Have had to put in on hold at mo though.
