Back Packing in OZ, Really need help?

I have just booked my flight to go to OZ on November the 2nd with my fiance, our intention is to travel for 6 - 8 months around OZ. We are bit confused on what to do when we get there, we are flying to Perth. Do we jus get off the plane and find the nearest hostel, or do u have to book, Any help or suggestions will be really appreciated.

There are loads of hostels in Perth and its not neccessary to book, but its good when you go to any australian city to book a YHA hostel for a couple of days cos you know they'll be relativly nice and central.

I stayed in the Perth YHA in 2007 and it was really good, spacious, clean, friendly and right next the the centre of Perth. I also stayed in a few others in Perth and this was the best. So if i was you i would book it for at least a week, cos it gets quite busy, iv had times where i only booked it for a couple of days, and i had to move out because there wasn't any space to re-book. So do a week, and if you like it you can extend your stay straight away.

You should be able to book by email with this address:

perthcity@yhawa.org.au

And also i would by a YHA card if your there for up to 8 months, its about $40 and even if you don't stay in a YHA hostel everywhere, you'll save money.

p.s i think the YHA hostel in perth is particularly expensive compared to others, maybe $28 a night, or $26 with a YHA card (2007 prices), so if you really want to scrimp on money maybe try some others like britannia or globe or something.

Hope this helps!

I would suggest you book the first night or two so you can go and sleep and get your bearings. Try the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) if you're on a budget. Join and save more.

Attached are some websites for you to check what's here to do and see.

Australia is relatively safe. Yes there is crime here, but then where isn't there? Just think about things you'd do at home. Are you going to flash huge sums of money around or walk unknown, unlit streets alone? Of course not, so be aware of that kinda thing here and you'll be fine.

Enjoy.

I would suggest you book as a minimum the first nights stay each time you move from one location to another. Not booking in advance has it's advantages like getting fellow travelers suggestions on where to stay, what to see and who to book it through to get the best deals. Most budget travel agencies have last minute specials but you have to be flexible. Australia is a very big place so you might want to draw up a bit of an itinerary of what you want to see before you leave so you get to see them all. Be warned school holidays and public holidays will be more expensive than other times and much busier so you'll need to look at booking over that time.

You don't absolutely have to book, but it's usually a good idea to book somewhere for your first couple of days. You'll get off the plane dead tired, grubby and jet lagged and the last thing you want to be doing is having to look around for somewhere to stay. Go online and check out the reviews of various hostels so you can pick something to your tastes and budget.
http://www.bugaustralia.com/ You'll find this to be a very useful site - check out the Destination Guides section too.

It would be a good idea to book at least your first week at the hostel. You wouldn't want to get there and it's full. As from there you probably won't know dates. If you can work out where you will be over Christmas and other big holidays, it would be wise to book those places in advance.

I would also avoid Queensland in November - Early December (schoolies)

if you want a hotel then you should probably book a place.
if you go to http://www.wotif.com/search/Advanced?country=AU&region=14&viewType=all&startDay_displayed_=Mon+20+Apr+2009&startDay=&accommodationTypeMatch=&roomTypeCategoryMatch=&starRatingMatch=&maximumPrice=&isoCurrencyCode=AUD&propertyNameMatch=&assumedCountry=AU&selectedSuggestionId=&searchTerms=

it has cheap hotels :):)

I have travelled so many times to different cities in Australia, and never booked. I find it easier to just pick a place instead of going through the trouble of finding the place i have booked. In cities like Perth there will be something available. But if you feel safer booking a place, i would book for a few nights only. You will often find there are cheaper (and sometimes even nicer) places around than what you found online.

I dont really know much to be honest but one of my work colleagues daughter arrived in Sydney at the start of the week after backpacking from Asia and said that Australia is the most expensive place she has been to so far and she has been to Dubai which isnt cheap!

She is staying in a hostel right on bondai beach so it is worth the expence as it is beautiful.
