Oh dear your answers are so negative. Of course it's nice to take someone with you but then you are stuck with what they want to do. If you do it alone and are sensible you will love it. Oh so many backpackers come here alone . They meet up with other like minded people at the backpackers and make friends for life. There are thousands of young people backpacking around Australia at any given time. The chances are you will be safe despite what others say . Australia is a safe country compared to most in this world. The people are friendly and there is a huge amount of diverse country to be seen. Come on over.

I have travelled all over Australia, NZ, Asia and North America on my own and have had no problems at all. In fact i met more people when i travelled on my own than i did when i went with friends. If you're on your own, you are more likely to talk to people otherwise you will be sat in the corner on your own. I went to Aus for a year in 2003/4 and i'd say about half the people i met were travelling on their own.
As long as you are sensible and don't in any unnecessary danger, you'll be fine. There are streets in my hometown that i won't walk down after dark so why would i do that in a foreign country?!?!?!?!
Don't worry too much about it. On your own or with friends, you'll have a fantastic time.

yeah it should be good, Just dont read the books Highway to nowhere by Richard shears or Sins of the brother by Les Whittaker,oh And whatever you do dont go to this website:

you'll be fine on your own if you stay in hostels.

The east coast between Sydney and Cairns is a well-trodden backpacker routes so you'll meet loads of people.

It's probably better to take a friend with you, you'll have more fun than being on your own. Me and my husband went travelling around Australia in 2004 and was very fun, we bought a caravan and went from Adelaide to Mackay(north Queensland) stayed along the coast. Seen lots of beautiful places, and you get to meet lots of people.
