Don't listen to Hmmmppphh ... Koalas are not bears. And she's never been here. We have a song over here that is goes, "Please don't call me a Koala Bear, 'Cause I'm not a bear at all"..... They look like bears, but they aren't ...
Anyway, there are a lot of places you would find to camp etc along the east coast. I have spent my whole life taking trips between southern NSW and Mid Coast QLD, I can't give you pricing in pounds, but in AUD, the cheap places coast about $25 a night to set up a tent in their grounds. Most places are great and if you love camping, you'll find plenty of places to camp and "rough it". Otherwise, just don't stay at camp sites in Sydney. Try to stick to the sites along the quiet towns along the coastline. Otherwise, I think September to November are the best times. I think spring is beautiful, just coming out of winter and going into summer, you get a lot of nice clear days and beautiful evenings. Have a good trip.

Are you coming on a Working Holiday visa so that you can work for time to time to stretch your money? Our immigration people will expect you to have at least AUD$5000 plus money for your return ticket if you're on a WH visa and that should be enough for 6 months if you can do at least some work.

For the east coast, probably the best time to begin would be Feb/Mar in the south and gradually head north for the next 6 months following the sun. If you like it very hot and would like to experience a hot summer Christmas , start a couple of months earlier in in mid- Dec. and then head north.

How could you miss the West Coast, that's the best part!

my husband is Aussie...we reckon £3,000 will do for spends...including hostel fees....thats around 120 pounds a week..which is about 300 dollars.

Not sure about price, but if you're planning on visiting central Australia, you're better off being there mid-year as it becomes EXCRUCIATINGLY hot!
Summer in Melbourne is great, and we definitely have the night-life for a fabulous New Years!

Hmmpphhhh
Is redundancy like the U.S. tax refund? I assume something similar. Six months? Well, unless you plan on living on the koalas or something (poor bears!) you will need much I assume. That's all I gotta say. Haven't been to Australia. Been to Europe a many times though.
