I know I am biased but Rockhampton fits your question. We are a lovely clean town with a great lifestyle and we have a university too. Being a regional centre we cater for everything right here and its a great place to socialise. We are not too big. Check us out, you won't be dissapointed.

I would agree with Wollongong. The city itself is industrial, with the steel works based at Port Kembla further south, however the foreshore has a fantastic bike track with cafes and echo wetlands and Wollongong is the gateway to the fabulous secluded south coast perfect for camping trips where you literally have the whole beach to yourself. Sydney is a 1 half hour train ride away.

Woolongong... The university there is supposed to be one of the best..

Mel
Have you considered Wollongong University.

Wollongong is a regional city 1.5 hours south of Sydney. We have everything you need from a city without the hustle and bustle.

UOW have won many awards throughout the years and are still a very popular international uni campus.

I don't know how big is too big, but Newcastle is a decent coastal town and the University of Newcastle has an excellent reputation.

Universities in Australia tend to stick to the large metropolitan areas. There is no such thing as a "college town" in Australia. The universities go where the people go, not the other way round.

Newcastle is one of the exceptions that proves the rule, a medium town with a university that punches above its weight.

I live in a lovely area and are approx 15 mins from the new Springfield Lakes Uni near Ipswich outside Brisbane. Its a semi rural area with all ammenties on the doorstep. Springfield Lakes itself is also a lovely area which gives easy access to Ipswich or Brisbane City. Hope this helps

Have you considered Deakin University in Geelong (population about 200,000)? They have a beautiful waterfront campus, no traffic problems, and are close to the bush as well as all the surf beaches down the coast. Geelong has most of the facilities of a big city without the problems.

How about Ipswich in Queensland?
even though it is technically a city(population) it still has a small town feel to it. its one of the few cities in Australia that didn't start out as a penal colony and our original settlers had money and the architecture reflects that. we have a couple of good universities and the universities in Brisbane are just a short train ride away. Also has some fantastic restaurants and most people are very friendly.
