Try Hobart, it has a harbour just as beautiful as Sydney, Mt Wellington dominates the skyline, the natural bushland is only a few minutes from the centre of the city and it retains many of its beautiful georgian and victorian buildings.
Less than an hours drive and you can be in some great wineries, among some of the tallest trees in the world or visiting seal colonies

If you like nature, Tasmania has some of the best walks. It also has loads of wildlife, much more than in the main states. It is evident from the roadkill you see along the roads. Yes, sad, but true.

Last year when we were there, lots of wildlife could be seen at Cradle Mountain, which has spectacular scenery as well. Best weather in summer (Dec to Feb) which would be timely for your trip.

well because i am from perth i am gonna say perth :)
but i would say most of w.a coast line is the best, jan to feb it is really hot so the beaches are perfect for this weather.
also check out hilaries and the rotto is the most amazing place ever :) and there is penguin and seal island. The city does have its attractions but i pefer the places a little out from the city center- however kings park is a must.
oh and up exmouth way the snorkelling is to die for! and the wildlife emus, kangaroos lizards etc.

Why not try the Whitsunday Islands? (in Queensland, Australia)
I am Australian and we went there for our honeymoon.
It is absolutely breathtaking!!!

Base yourself at Airlie Beach and visit the surrounds and islands from there. Go snorkelling at the Great barrier Reef, visit the whitest beach in the world Whitehaven Beach (take sunglasses though cause you can get "snow" blindness from the glare) then you can drift on down to the Gold Coast/Sunshine Coast and live it up there with their Bris-Vegas lifestyle!

Whereever you go is sure to be amazing.

Why not try the top end? Darwin, Alice Springs (very hot in Jan Feb though)

Or more Rainforest? Noosa? Cairns?

Or Tasmania? They have amazing scenery down there too.

Man I love being Australian.

I haven't been to all of our cities (obviously!!) but I would recommend Perth - although if you don't like the heat, I wouldn't advise it as it can be pretty hot! we have fabulous coastal scenery as well as the hills (not mountains - sorry!!)

But why stick to a city? The north of WA has some fantastic scenery - brilliant red earth against blue blue water and white white sand. Some great gorges and other landscapes and you can fly there on Qantas or Virgin. Steer clear of the cities - go for the out of the way places!!

EDIT: Well, I'm giving everyone a thumbs up to counteract the idiot who has thumbs downed (?) everyone!!

I would have to say any place in WA - we have it all. Unfortunately late jan/feb may not be the best time to visit - it gets really hot and sticky up north.

Darwin is also very spectacular - there is no place like Kakadu

WA has the best sunsets - the sun setting over the ocean is just beautiful - I should know I get to see it everyday

We have views of mountains, beautiful sunset and a glorious landscape. BUT we don't live in a city. I live in a place called Boyne Island. We are in Queensland, about 20 klms south of Gladstone. We have all the benefits of good employment, small community, great scenery, great beaches but the benefits of good shopping and medical services only 20minutes to 1 hour away.

well i think sydney's views are absolutely breathtaking, but goldcoast has some stunning views of the ocean and adelaide (though boring) has great "outback" type of thing... if you're willing to venture away from the big cities, go to alice springs and drive up to ayer's rock (uluru)... amazing...

Mackay.

It has mountains, rainforest, the most beautiful beaches, the great barrier reef, islands, scuba diving, and the people are the most sweetest nicest people you could ever meet. Bowen is nearby, Prosperpine, Shute Harbour, Airlie Beach...

Personally, I'm planning on moving there in a few years :)

But then there are places like Kakadu, the Kimberleys, Alice Springs, Uluru...

To poster above... Queensland is a state, not a city.

If you've been to Melbourne then its time to try Sydney.

In Sydney you have the beautiful Blue Mountains including the three sisters.

You have the beautiful coastlines.

The great dividing range.

The sea cliff bridge, the views are amazing.

You have wineries in the Hunter Valley.

Go to Sydney but hire a car and travel outside the city, thats where the true beauty is.
