Go straight to the south island. Fly into Christchurch, a two and a half hour drive north is Kaikoura where you will find whales, and an hour and a half drive to Akaroa from Christchurch you will find dolphins. You will find everything you need to see in New Zealand in the south island. And avoid the busy hassle of navigating your way thru Auckland. If you find the time, go down to Queenstown and surrounding areas. It is very breathtaking and remarkable.

Rotorua on the North Island. It does have a sulphur smell, but there is a lot to see and do.
