It really depends on what you like. If warm weather is important for you, don't go south of Sydney, head to Queensland. Brisbane is nice and laid-back to be a big city, and up north i really like Cairns - very tropical. If you're not too worried about it getting a bit chilly during winter months, I recommend Sydney, Melbourne or Perth. All absolutely great cities, you won't regret spending time in any of them.
Sydney: http://www.gondwananet.com/australia-facts-newsouthwales-sydney.html
Melbourne: http://www.gondwananet.com/melbourne.html
Perth: http://www.gondwananet.com/perth.html
Brisbane: http://www.gondwananet.com/brisbane.html
Cairns: http://www.gondwananet.com/cairns.html

Areas - as a rule i'd stay in the city centre or at least inner suburbs, so that you can actually enjoy the city instead of just seeing endless suburbs. Most big-city people never get to enjoy their cities because they actually live in suburbs maybe 30km away from the city centre. I n Sydney i used to live in Darlinghurst and Woolloomooloo, it was great, walking distance to everywhere. In Cairns, i really like Edge Hill. Other cities i have only visited so i can't recommend any areas to stay.

South Australia is the best for sure!! But it depends on what area you are looking into working for- we have lots of opportunities here... However it might not be the kind of work you are looking for!

Mariiiyaaa :)
I live in Brisbane and I love it here! First of all, the weather here is really good. It's not that hot and usually we have mild winters. Brisbane is definitely a modern city. We have a popular mall here called Queen Street Mall. You'll love it! And also, transportation here is easy! We have a busway. In case you don't know what that means, it is roads that are built just for buses that cars cannot access. It is different and much bigger than a bus stop. There are buses coming almost every minute. You just need to get into the right one. :) With buses, you can get almost anywhere, especially the city. Also, it's only about 45 minutes drive to Gold Coast where the are lots of theme parks like Movie World, Dream World, White Water World, Sea World etc.

I love Darwin. It's different and unique. Plenty of jobs going around april for the start of the tourist season. Sydney is a wonderful city . big and interesting . I love the beaches of the GoldCoast so Brisbane would be good for work and close to The GoldCoast.
