I can't tell you much about Melbourne & Sydney apart from climbing the bridge ( www.bridgeclimb.com.au/?mt_typ=9060&sour... ) & the hunter valley wineries ( www.winecountry.com.au/maps.aspx )
but I have travelled around most of Aus and if you are into adventure you are going to the right place! Cairns obviously has the Great Barrier Reef depending on finances this is a must to visit either snorkelling or you can get your scuba ticket this site will give you a start ( www.prodive-cairns.com.au ) You can also take the Kuranda skyrail which is a breathtaking experience ( www.cairnsattractions.com/a_skyrail.html ) Check out the Overland Telegraph Track in Cape York. ( www.capeyorkmotorcycles.com.au/why-capey... )
About 500k's or so out of Alice Springs you can go to Ayres rock, climbing this will give you a whole new outlook on the world. Finishing it off with dinner under the stars is .... ( www.ozhorizons.com.au/nt/alice/arr/dinne... )
I'd recommend to stop at Darwin as well and do a tour through Litchfield National Park or if you have more time Kakadu ( www.outback-australia-travel-secrets.com... )
If you are going to buy or hire a 4x4 then the Kimberleys is a wonderful experience.
There are many working stations throughout Australia that you can stay at along the way.
There is just so much to do and see Hiking, 4x4ing, Road trips, Diving, Motorbike adventures, It depends on money and time, I could give you six months worth of stuff in each state but I hope this is a start. P.S. Tazzie and Perth are hidden treasures! |

Eat good food in Melbourne- Visit all our Capital cities.
Hire an open top car for a day or two and drive the Great Ocean Road. Stay for a while in Sydney the harbour is great.
Come to Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts the best beaches in the world are on the Gold Coast. Learn to surf if you dont already and you will not wish to leave.----- Morton Bay off Brisbane has 365 Islands. well worth a few days to see.
Visit and stay in the Whitsundays, learn to sail, one of the most beautiful places to sail in. The Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas too good to miss.
I'm a coast person others can tell you about the outback.
Transport ! I say fly, If you are on your own it's cheaper than motoring in between cities and a lot quicker. If you can get on the net cheap flights are always available. You can always hire a car at your destinations if you wish.
Welcome and have a great time. |

There is so much to do and see in Australia you will wonder how your going to fit it all in, we were lucky enough to go twice this year but only for 4 weeks each time, Cairns is the most amazing place with so many trips and adventures to see and do, Sydney is fantastic for everything under the sun and Melbourne is so diverse and multicultural you won't have a minuet to sit still, so wish I had a year to explore all of those places again, have yourself a wonderful time. |

Drove from Cairns to Sydney on my 50th birthday trip. Beautiful country. Couple of places to stop along the way are Noosa Heads and Byron Bay. |

I live in aus, and have to say if you want to see the real australia, head to Northern Territory to see uluru, (the nightime dinner there is amazing, pitch black with champagne dinner and more stars than you could imagine.) Kakadu national park. The wet season is when all the great wildlife and birds will be out. But theres always crocodiles you can see going down the gorges in the boat. (The Outbacks not my cup of tea but its a worthwile experience and tourists seem to love it)
If your heading from Sydney, do a road trip up to cairns, stop at coffs harbour, nimbin, byron bay, surfers paradise etc. Go to Sea World, Dreamworld, Movie World in Brisbane. Then maybe go to the whitsunday islands there are plenty to choose from, loads of great watersports. Definately see the Daintree rainforest and Great Barrier Reef in northern Queensland.
Perth is nice too, see Fremantle and Broome while your there.
Be sure to climb the Harbour Bridge in Sydney, (my home town :) twighlight is nice. And speed boat around the harbour. |
