I'm from NZ. I've lived in the UK and I've just moved to Aus. I wouldn't say one or the other is 'better' but that they're different.
I preferred the UK. It's more convenient to live in and it's FAR more interesting. Quality of life's an odd thing to gauge, as great things in the UK aren't so obvious or taken advantage of. Australia despite its efforts doesn't have a great deal of culture, especially outside of the major city centres, like NZ it's got the disadvantage of being a young country. And until the anomoly of the credit crunch the UK had far more opportunity.
And many Aussies won't liek it when I honestly say that while Australia's quite pretty the UK has overall nicer scenery.
Not that I mind Australia, it's a very nice country too and in many ways it beats the UK, such as opportunities to PLAY sport rather than watch it. But overall I think the UK has more to offer.
Overall I liked the UK more. I don't mind the Aussies on the whole but despite my the attempts of the PC NZ education system I found the English great and interesting company and that I could easily make a natural connection with them.
As for world influence it's not really a fair contest. The UK has far more world influence but like culture that's something the UK enjoys great advantages in.
So while I'm not certain I could say either is 'better' and that they're different. I will say I preferred life in the UK. But they're both nice first world countries and I can regard them as 'better' than third world nations. |

Although born and educated in Britain, I have travelled the world but now live in absolute paradise, Queensland Australia.
Australia has so much diversity. If you like cooler weather, history and incredible unspoilt scenery, then Tasmania's the place.
Queensland has luscious tropical rain forests, fabulous beaches and wonderful rural villages with tropical fruit plantations. New South Wales has cities with night life, shopping and miles upon miles of open grazing land. Victoria has quaint rural retreats among rolling hills and winter ski resorts. Both Victoria and South Australia have theatre, culture and modern cities, restaurants, wineries etc etc.
Western Australia and Northern Territory still have a "new frontier" atmosphere as well as incredible desert scenery alongside modern cosmopolitan city life.
Compare this with Britain's, cold, bleak, depressing, crowded and dirty towns, unhappy people and unfriendly restaurant and shop staff. |

I'm Canadian, and I would much rather prefer living in Australia. Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, laid-back people, and gorgeous women! |

It's no contest ! Look I was born in the UK but really , apart from the cultural & historical ties , what have they got to offer ..
The weather is usually depressing , the economy sucks , the cost of living is depressing ....any wonder that we get here & think we've died & gone to heaven .... |

Okay, I don't know how to send you links for web sites, but have a look on you-tube for the 'Bundaberg Rum Add-We wish England were Australia' it's hilarious and it says it all. See if this works-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OidSD14mGE It does I just tried it, so funny.
Hey Bardy-My Dad used to say the main difference between Australians and the British was, Australians think 200 years is a long time, and the British think 200 miles is along way, lol! |

Australia. The British people are becoming oppressed...they can't even fly their own flag for crying out loud. |

Australia of course. The UK is more controlled by Brussels now in business and in many of its laws. We in Aus control our own destiny without outside laws interfering with us. We do not want to be "the centre of the world influence" so leave that to those that do.
Sure Aus has little history 200 hundred years is a long time for us, where as 2000 years for Britain is common. We are young but going places. |

On the world influence and culture fronts, I would have to give it to Britain - no contest on those two points. In every other way though, Australia wins hands down. It's simply a much nicer country to live in. Nicer, more friendly people who have a positive 'can do' attitude to life; infinitely better weather; more room to move; more opportunities and a better quality of life for everyone, but particularly for people who weren't born to privilege; better sportsmen and women and an economy that is still going places instead of down the tube. |
