Buying a car in Melbourne is no different to buying a car anywhere else. There are car dealerships that will sell second hand and new cars. You can also look in the papers (such as the Herald Sun's carsguide or local papers. You can search by internet (www.carsales.com.au).
As with anywhere else, be careful who you buy from - some dealers may be dodgy so get a friend who knows about cars to some with you. It's also a good idea to get the car checked out by a mechanic before you buy. The RACV offers this service for a small fee.
Try an negotiate a price, many dealers and individuals will be willing to give you a discount.
Make sure that the car has a Road Worthy Certificate. If it doesn't you will not be able to register it or drive it legally. |

Depends on the car. Hyundai Accent about $33,500 new -this is not the cheapest car available but is reasonably reliable. The Holden Astra sells for about $ 22,000 and up., the Mazda 3 is around the same price, perhaps a little more expensive depending on level of goodies. Good used cars from about $15,000 for a recent model in good condition. You might get a good used car for $10,000, much below that you need care or luck. Join the RACV and have them inspect the car first. |

Yes - as an earlier reply said - go to www.carsales.com.au and search in your price category. If you are buying from a dealer it should come with a roadworthy certificate already supplied. If from a private seller they may provide the certificate, or you might have to do it yourself by taking yr car to a garage to get a licensed tester to tell you what it needs, and then getting the car fixed, and taking it back for the certificate. If you are not sure what the cost is in your own currency type in online currency converter in yahoo and that will help you. |

G'day,
Consider this: If you buy 2nd hand cars from newspaper classified (direct from user) then it is cheaper, but you can't be sure of the quality. Sure you can test-drive them for 15min, but sometimes it is just not enuf.
If you buy from REPUTABLE 2nd-hand car dealers, then most of the time it comes with warranty and it is pretty much reliable. But of course it is more expensive.
Hope this helps. Good luck on your purchase ;) |

If you're looking for a car for traveling in, there are generally a whole lot listed on notice boards in hostels (and internet cafes). Though it varies, you should be able to get something that'll get you there for around 1000 AUD. If you have the time, you can sometimes get a great deal as people's visas come to an end and they have to get rid of the car before leaving the country.
Make sure to get a road worthy certificate with the car at the time of purchase, I wouldn't recomend buying one without one. |

You can spend as little or as much as you like. I personally know the General Manager at Winter and Taylor Motorgroup in Geelong. He is a honest man who will direct you to the best car for you even if he does not sell it to you. Heres his contact info. Tell him Ducatifred sent you. Best of luck!

Do not, under any circumstances buy a car in Melbourne.
In fact do not buy a car anywhere in Australia.
Get out now - save yourself, run for your life before it's too late.
We all make mistakes. Learn from them. Get out - go anywhere - don't look back - you remember what it did for Lott's wife is Israel? She turned into a pillar of salt when she looked back. That's nothing compared to looking back at Melbourne. You could be turned into a can of Fosters - or even worse - you could be turned into (Lord forbid) an Australian! |
