Californian visiting Sydney next week? |
Hello. I'm visiting Sydney, Australia next week. I love experiencing different cultures - Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and now Australia is next.
I want to experience the Australian culture to the full extent. However, a few Australians have told me that their country has become very much Americanized. Even the young + middle-aged people have started adopting American terms and slangs (because we're so rich, powerful, and represent modernity). So the problem is: how can I experience Australian culture in Sydney? I'd love to hear your Crikeys and Cheerios all day long. Crikey, mate! |

Sydney has just been voted 1 of the top 10 cities in the world
Don't expect to hear any cheerios or crickeys that went out decades ago. Also we are not gullible enough to follow Americans because of their wealth power and modernity we are laid back people who are not that easily impressed. |

Visiting Sydney and expecting to be met with real Okker people is like going to Manhattan and expecting everyone to be wearing Sixguns and 10 Gallon hats.
Sydney is just one small place in the great patchwork of Australian culture, and Steve Irwin did not represent any of them.
One week in the major East coast metropolis will introduce you to just one very small part of our lifestyle and culture. |

http://www.reptilepark.com.au/
The Australian Reptile Park and Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1948 - by the late and great ERIC WORRELL, Australia's first naturalist - and is now regarded as one of the countries premier attractions. The Sanctuary is The only zoo in Australia committed to saving lives with a Venom-Milking Program in place for the past 50+ years, saving over 300 lives each year being the sole supplier of a variety of venoms, which is used for all snake and funnel-web anti-venom in Australia. This place is not fare from Wyong its in the same direction.
Home also to many Australian cuddly MAMMALS such as the unique platypus, koalas, wombats, Tasmanian devils, echidnas, dingoes and of course friendly hand-fed kangaroos.
Some of Australia's largest REPTILES, such as MASSIVE American alligators, GIANT tortoises and HUGE pythons live at the Park.
Photograph keepsakes of koalas or large python are available.
Nestled in tranquil bushland with trickling streams meandering over lazy waterfalls, Australian trees exuding exquisite bush fragrances, the calls from a multitude of heavenly birds and the amazing beauty of Australian wildflowers await any local or international tourist who wishes to be enchanted!

This site will tell you all about the Sydney aquarium at Darling Harbour - visit Darling Harbour its a great place with lots to see and do - take a ferry boat to the harbour

I actually disagree with the person above the fact is that most of the people are very laid back and have a she'll be right attitude. the areas I have listed are areas that will give you a great Australian experience. You will meet pretty laid back people passionate about the environment and their community. Katoomba is well worth a visit where there are lots of Australian experiences with aboriginal people playing diggerydos and telling dream time stories. |

Get out of Sydney and head to some smaller towns and visit the local pub. Australians are much better educated that those from the US and are far more diverse for most actually realise that other countries exist other than their own and often travel to experience other cultures.
You are also sadly mistaken if you think that Australians consider the US in the same way as yourself, as to many of us it is a THIRD WORLD NATION. I mean what RICH and POWERFUL nation doesn't provide their citizens with free health care?
As for the slang that you will hear as already stated by others you will not hear Crikey and especially not Cheerio. But here is a site that will offer you some tips on what you may hear.. |

Strewth, "crikey" went out decades ago. I'm over 50 and I have not heard anyone use it for umpteen years. Apart from Mr. S. Irwin and we knew why he used it. Went over big in the States, reinforcing a stereotype.
Children (and I include teenagers) imitate stuff they see on the net and in movies. Always have. So you will hear a version of the usual stuff you hear back in Ca. A version, probably not identical. Australian and US culture derive from the same roots, so it's easily adapted.
You want to hear the "real" Australia? Get out to Dubbo, go to the zoo, stay in one of the motels along the highway, talk to some of the other guests, maybe the people running the place, go over to the West Dubbo Bowling Club for a meal and maybe a beer or two, or better, a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Hunter Valley.
Don't bother with Bondi or such stereotypical places. |

He's gone fishing.

Travel west, you will hear it out here. Have fun, and don't spend too much time in Sydney, it is Sh#thouse mate. |
