Can I change my british electrical plugs to Australian plugs?

My husband and I are moving back to Australia after being away for 5 years. We set up home here and had to kids here in the UK only problem is we have 5 tvs 3 dvd players kettle, toaster, and many other things we bought over here. Can I have the plugs changed by an electrician over in Oz who can also advise us as to whether or not some can be used because I do realise because of voltage differences we may not be able to use some and I don't want to have loads of adapters

We did. just change them over but i would not bring your tv with you some do not work but electric tools, lights etc are fine.

Well, the UK has 220-240 volts and 50 Hz, while Australia has 240V and 50 Hz, so most of your UK appliances will probably work so long as you replace the plug or use an adaptor.

Yes, electricians can replace the plug, but the cost of electricians may make it uneconomic to do so for cheap items like kettles etc. When you consider the cost of transporting all those appliances and the cost of converting them, maybe for some appliances you might be better off just buying a new one here in Australia.

5 tvs? What the??
I agree....it would be more economican re:the smaller items to just buy them here rather than take up space in your shipping with bringing things like kettles and toaster - unless they were particularly expensive ones? The larger items you can get changed over. I brought home lots of stuff and the voltage is fine between UK and Australia. It IS annoying having lots of adaptors though!

Sell the lot in the UK.

There is no problem with voltage, plugs can be changed. But it just isn't worth your while bringing the tea kettle and toaster as they can be replaced here cheaply.

The TVs may not work with Australian broadcasting standards which are PAL-D for analog and heaven knows what for digital. Australia uses region 3 coding for DVD players which is the standard for the Pacific area and so DVDs obtained here most likely would not work in an English player unless it is de-regionalised. Bring one DVD player for your English DVDs if you must. I'd get rid of the other two.

You can get a good working secondhand TV in Australia for say $250, maybe less.

In addition transporting heavy, bulky items like TVs around the world is expensive and used electrical goods have next to no value on the Australian market.

Australia & UK have the same electricity supply - well virtually the same anyway - so any competent person can put Australian plugs onto UK appliances, you don't have to have an electrician to do it.
UK TV's are no good here due to different transmission sytems. It might be worth bringing just one if your DVD's are not Australia compatable (its a cunning move by the manufacturers to carve up the market) and also bring a DVD player. Australian DVD payers cost as little as $40, so its not worth the freight to bring yours over unless the compatibility thing comes into it.
Kettle, toaster etc - its up to you. If you have spare room in your container then why not. The freight companies charge by volume not weight, otherwise sell the lot and repurchase once here.

No Really you are better to sell them in the uk and buy more here. Electrical goods are very reasonably priced bigger items you can bargain a deal especially if your buying several items. i bought a spare toaster and kettle yesterday with a 12 month guarantee from Aldi Supermarket for $7.50 each. Aldi is a new supermarket chain that originates in Germany.
