You will need to apply for skilled visa. There are 2 ways to do this:
1. Apply directly thru Australian High Commissions/Embassy nearest to where you live to choose what category of immigration that you want to be. This is the cheaper way but you will need to understand all the requirements and preparations by yourself. A bit difficult if your English is not very good.
2. Apply thru immigration agency. They can make a preliminary assessment of your chance to emigrate to Australia. If you have enough point, then they will help you to prepare the documents and what to do/say during the interview. This of course come at a cost, but for some ppl it is money well spent. Some agents that I know reputable are as follows:
immigration@nevile.com.au
adrian@wklawyers.com.au
For jobs, these are Australian employment websites:
www.seek.com.au
www.mycareer.com.au
www.careerone.com.au
Hope this helps. Good luck on your application and welcome to Australia :)

You will need a visa of some sort. Unfortunately US citizens don't qualify for working holiday visas so you will need to look into getting a Permanent Skilled visa or a temporary work visa - both of which are difficult to obtain.

no because australia wants SKILLED immigrants and not another burden on the welfare system.

You will need a work visa and they are very difficult to get .Usually you must have a skill in an area in which they need workers...these jobs are usually for highly educated people in high tech areas. I hve know people wh have been granted work visas due to their qualifications, but it took over 3 years to be processed. You can go to the website below to begin yur rrsearch.

You could join the Australian Immigration Newsgroup, I'm linking you to a "how to" on newsgroups. Once you are set up, just type in Aus and scroll down to find it. There are some really helpful people in there, and they should be able to answer your questions. Don't worry, us Aussies aren't all ignorant and rude.
