When I retire I would like to live in the US. I don't plan to work and won't be seeking American citizenship. How do I go about obtaining permanent residence? |

A number of points have been adequately covered by answers given by others ... so there is no need to repeat them.
However, since you are planning to retire ... have you thought about business or infrastructure investment?
Many countries welcome retirees on the basis of significant investment ... Good luck ...
Just one question ... Why America?
Nicaragua or Spain have wonderful retirement options also! |

You and SarahBeth above should get together and plan to go at the same time. Good luck. |

Axley1, first of all I would be going to the US Representative offices there in London, and sit down with them, you may have to take your financial papers with you, as with all countries that is a primary factor, They are going to want to look into you, like how you are going to support yourself, if you will be able to afford their medical insurance etc etc etc, Where your going to live like state, then they dig into you, your personal history etc etc. I have moved to another country, and it took two years just to get a residents card, my next step is citizenship. Doesn't matter if you think certain papers are trivial to you, 99% of the time it isn't trivial to them. Be prepared for a hard slog and some disappointments. |

i think you've got this in the wrong catergory mate.
Try the Embassy, it will be extremely difficult as you have no intention to working and part of it will be luck. |

I've been looking at moving to the US too. I'll be honest with you. If you're not planning on working or don't have anything to offer them, then you might as well forget it, they won't have a visa type for you.
The only options I can think of would be either marrying a US citizen, which might not be all that do-able, setting up a business there (but you'll need at least US$500,000 and I don't know if this is the best economic environment to start a business) or maybe trying the green card lottery, but if you were born in the UK you can't enter because they've sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the US in the last 5 years. |
