There are a number of options depending on the type of travel:
If you are a resident of Australia and taking a short trip then an Australian insurance company would be best.
If you don't mind paying in US$ you should try Squaremouth which is a site that specializes in comparing medical insurance policies for any nationality traveling outside their home country.
Check with an American Express travel agency - they sell travel insuance but I am not sure you can get it in Australia. You should also check with the airline you are using.
