Can anyone suggest a well-done, Australian TV series? |
The only Australian series that get any international airing is Neighbours and to a lesser extent Home & Away. There's gotta be more than that? Can anyone suggest any other good Australian series, I'm not bothered if it's comedy, medical, drama, whatever, as long as it's good and I guess gives a foreign viewer a reasonablely realistic view on life in Australia (even tho that's sometimes hard with fictional tv). |

Waterrats
McLeod's Daughters
White Collar Blue
Skippy the Bush Kangaroo (known from the late 60s)
Barrier Reef (known from the early 70s)

kath and kim.
it wont give you a necissarily realistic view on australia, but it is meant to be based on your 'typical' australian family.
but it is one of my favourite tv shows, its amazing. |

An excellent 4-part series on ABC recently was "East of Everything" with Richard Roxborough, Tom Long. Quite realistic.

For very Australian humour, definitely Kath & Kim or The Chasers War On Everything. |

kath and kim is about the only decent one left, we need more soapies like, all the rivers run, seven mile creek, country practice, etc, used to be a huge fan of neighbours and seriously cant stand the show now and so sick of seeing snotty teenage dramas, have enough of that at home with out seeing it on tv |

The Secret Life of Us
Blue Heelers
Sea Change

Rain Shadow

MDA
Summer Heights High (Realistic parody - very funny)
The Chaser's War on Everything (Comedy)
Sadly, not one of the above is still on TV, though I think Chaser is returning later this year and the Summer Heights creator will probably have something too. |

I don't think your going to get a realistic view from TV, maybe from the current affair programs.
A new TV series in Australia is 'Underbelly', it is based on a true story but very loosely. Pizza is a funny show based on... wogs in Australia I guess, it's just funny not too realistic though!
Neighbours and H&A do give you a slight idea, but even shows like All Saints (long running medical drama) are full of soap opera bits. |
