Can someone please tell me a great holiday destination on the east coast of Australia?

Somewhere that isn't crawling with tourists and is relaxing and won't blow the budget :)

Agnes Water and the Town of 1770. Best spot that I hit on the East coast of OZ, called the Byron of 15 years ago, it doesn't have the amount to tourism that fills Byron today. One of the few places where you can surf and dive on the GB Reef in the same day.

Depends on what you want but the best beach in the entire world (as far as I'm concerned) is at Coolangatta, south of Surfer's Paradise. Surfer's is a tourist trap. Areas between Surfer's and Coolangatta also have beautiful beaches and are less expensive. Another very interesting trip is to Fraser Island. Well worth the money. If you like travelling around cities, Brisbane has a phenominal transportation system, both rail and boat. For that matter, all of Oz has great transportation.

Byron Bay is really nice, but a little "posh" so it may cost a bit more.
Gold Coast off season is really nice, and not overpopulated with tourists - peak season in Dec, Jan, start of Feb, but the rest of the year is pretty quiet. It picks up a bit at Easter and the September school holidays.
Gold Coast, accomodation is nice and cheap, lots to do, lovely beaches, most apartments have a pool as well, really friendly people.

Byron Bay is really beautiful.

Most of Australia doesn't crawl with tourists. It's a huge country with wide open spaces.

Even in Sydney, on a mid summer day or night, you can got to one of the beaches on 60km's of urban beaches and hardly notice anyone - in a city of approx. 4.5 million people, that's amazing.

But it sounds like you have some special things to consider - do you like environment, events , activities, solitude, climate.

I think your best best is to go to this directory of official tourism bureaus and do some research. Pictures often tell the best story.

Once you've found your place to rest you'll need a car and some accommodation. Click on the offers to get a full list which you can sort by location and price.

I've enclosed some planning tools to help you along:
