Immigration to Australia is restricted to people with skills and qualifications in occupations in which workers are in short supply in Australia. This applies to everyone: Americans, Canadians, Indians, Chinese, British, Europeans, etc etc etc. I don't know where you get the idea that anyone gets a free pass (refugees and asylum seekers rightly excluded from that statement). The rules are exactly the same for everyone, regardless of their point of origin.
If your skills aren't needed here or if your staying would take a job needed by an Australian, we have every right to refuse you a work visa.
If you're already here and want to stay, you must have entered on some type of non resident visa and you would have known its restrictions before you arrived. If an Australian did the same thing in America, they wouldn't be allowed to stay there either and that's as it should be.
The US makes it very difficult for Australians to work over there with very similar requirements and restrictions on work visas, and again, that's how it should be - they have a right to protect American workers as our government has a right to protect Australian workers.
Your only options are to study here or in the US and gain qualifications that are needed in Australia. Studying here is the better option of the two as you receive additional points for Australian qualifications.
And forget about hiring an immigration consultant. If you don't meet the clearly stated requirements, you won't get a visa. Save your money for further studies that will qualify you to come here. |

You say you love it hear[sic] and want to stay.
Sounds to me like you came here on a visitor's visa. In other words, you didn't go through the correct channels in order to emigrate.
If you came out here on a visitor's visa and are now applying for permanent residency, you're basically queue jumping. So no wonder "the government" is giving you grief.
So before you lay the "victim mentality" on people... I doubt (very much) that your being American has anything to do with whether you are allowed to stay or not. I suspect it has everything to do with how you went about "emigrating" in the first place. |

It has nothing to do with being American, like everyone else you must go through the proper channels, no one gets a free pass. |

I don't know but......
What other nationalities do you reckon get a "free pass"? Refugees? Asylum seekers? USA is a developed country, maybe others have a more valid reason for getting their visa/citizenship - whatever - fast tracked, |

Our government usually reciprocates the same conditions your government puts on us when we go to your country. Remember that when you wonder why you get such poor deal this side. One thing we don't do, thankfully, is make working here a green card lottery. If you do a job Australia needs then you get an easy ticket in. If you don't then you find it harder. The only nation that gets a free pass is New Zealand. They have a totally free trade market with us and travel is easier. Consider it much like the relationship the US has with Canada. Everyone else has to follow the queue just like you. |

What exactly do you mean by free pass?
If you're talking about refugees, it's because their homes are destroyed and have nowhere else to go.
You could stay under our skilled migrants program, so if you want to stay you could skill yourself up! Or marry one of the locals.
If it were up to me, anyone from any country could stay. But I think you should try every possibility, and you might get lucky! |

Generally, Australia has reciprocal relationships with other countries. If it is hard for an Australian to get into America, we make it hard for Americans to get in here. Even allowing for that, I think Americans get a an easy time compared to a lot of other countries. I would be interested in knowing who you see getting a "free pass" to come here. NZ does, perhaps, but thats the only place I can think of these days. |

I have not heard of a free pass into Australia.Anyone who wants to stay here legally needs to go through a lengthy and expensive process.Refugees are allowed into the country (legal ones) but mainly from country's that are war torn, battling poverty etc(basically from very bad third word conditions)Other migrant categories find it hard to get in.The rules are the same regardless of where you come from. However, they are a couple of things that can make it easier to stay here such as:job skills, being married to an Australian, having family members in Australia. |

If an Australian visited the USA and decided it would be nice to live there, they would experience exactly the same problems you are experiencing here. In fact, these days it's a lot harder to migrate to the States than it is to Australia.
To migrate to Australia you first need to return to the States and go through the same channels as any other migrant. Check out http://www.immi.gov.au for migration info. As an American you're unlikely to be seen as a refugee or asylum seeker so there really is no other way. |

I don't think Australia is letting everyone except Americans in. They are getting tougher on who they let in because Australia is getting over crowded. that is why is some places that have farms they are made to sell and subdivide into blocks to make more homes for the growing population. There must be a reason why they are not letting you stay which you haven't mentioned. I had a relative who came over from Europe and he wasn't able to get a Visa for more than three months and had to return. Don't feel that it is just you or just Americans. they deal with each person individually. What was the reason for not renewing your visa? |

Hey mate,
The first answer, is somewhat correct! But our G is making it harder for people to come in now and stay, for many reasons.
My advice for ya is to find a good Aussie woman and marry her!
Then you can call Australia home!! |

You should get yourself an immigation consultant [check the phone book]. Trying to deal with the Department of immigration without help will soon have you giving up in frustration since they don't appear interested in helping. |
