It's the capital of Tasmania. Tasmania is an island just south of Australia. It is a state of Australia.

Hobart is a city in Australia and yes, it's well worth a visit.

"Hobart is the state capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Founded in 1804 as a penal colony, it is Australia's second oldest and eleventh largest city, with a metropolitan population of 206,000. The city is the financial and administrative heart of Tasmania, and also serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations."

"Australia's first legal casino was the 17-storey Wrest Point Hotel Casino in Sandy Bay, opened in 1973. It is still the tallest building in the city, despite being several kilometres out of the CBD, and is a nationally recognised icon.

The Hobart nightlife primarily revolves around Salamanca Place and the waterfront area, but popular pubs, bars and nightclubs exist around the city as well. Major national and international music events are usually held at the University of Tasmania's Unibar, or the Casino.

Popular restaurant strips include Elizabeth Street in North Hobart, and Salamanca Place near the waterfront. These include a large number of ethnic restaurants including Chinese, Thai, Greek, Italian, Indian and Mexican.

Hobart is home to Australia's oldest theatre, the Theatre Royal. It also has three Village Cinema complexes, one each in the city, Glenorchy and Rosny.

Hobart is home to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, which is resident at the Federation Concert Hall on the city's waterfront. It offers a year-round program of concerts."

But I´ve never been there...but seens to be a very good city!

Australia - (on the Island of Tasmania of the south coast). Sorry, I've never been there but I understand it to be most pleasant.

Wow! You sure are dumb. Hobart is not a country. It is a city on the island of tasmania. Tasmania is a state of the country of Australia (Not Austria....Australia). Its a nice green island that can be accessed from the mainland by plane or by boat, which offers a nice trip over the tasman sea. How could you think Hobart is a country??? There is so much ignorance in the world

Never heard of it until I searched the internet and here is what I found:

Hobart is Australia's southernmost capital city. The fact that it is also the smallest is the key to its particular charm. A riverside city with a busy harbour, its mountain backdrop offers fine views over the beautiful Georgian buildings, numerous parks and compact suburbs below.

The city's conservative and provincial reputation among some mainlanders is undeserved. Hobart town has a thriving arts and crafts scene and a real sense of history, and for walking, eating and just soaking in the atmosphere it can't be bettered.

Never been but seems ok

Well Sparkle, In advise anyone travelling anywhere to find out as much as possible about their destination. The locals are impressed to see you have taken the time, and equally most unimpressed by a show of ignorance. Get yourself to a library and do a bit of studying.
It used to be part of a code of honour for seamen to be locked up for at least one night in Oz mainly for fighting. The easiest way of finding a fight was to refer to people having convicts a few generations back. "Are they handcuff marks on your wrists"? was a good way if getting yourself into the local clink, it was almost a religion for us, but you are a tourist so watch the convict jokes.
