Can you recycle in Australia?

I was in Oz this summer (Melbourne and Sydney) and the only recycling bins I could find (for plastic, cardboard and paper) were in our hostel! Is there no recycling programs? Do households have recycling bins? Or is the trash sorted?
Additional Details
Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your answers, I never knew all that! =D

I suppose it was just a confusion for our group of travellers, since we didn't see any recycling bins in public in both cities; but I'm so glad to hear the Aussies recycle. Oy Oy Oy!

We have three garbage bins in NSW.

A green one for your garden refuse, like lawn clippings, branches, etc.

A red one for every day trash, food scraps, plastic bags, pizza boxes, etc.

A yellow one for recycling, paper, cardboard, milk cartons, plastic bottles, etc all things recycling.

Many individuals in suburban areas have worm farms or compost heaps as well.

Household appliances such as lounge suites, fridges, etc can also be picked up by council and recycled. Usually leaving them on the front lawn for a week with a for sale sign will see them disappear over night.

We have charity bins for recycling clothing. We also have charity stores where you can take appliances and furniture for donations as well.

We have planet ark which is used for recycling old xmas and birthday cards.

We have bins at the supermarket for recycling our used shopping bags, we have also introduced calico bags for shopping as well which are growing in popularity.

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT PRETTY BIG ON RECYCLING AND PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT.EACH HOUSE GIVEN 3 BINS.1 FOR GENERAL HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH.1 FOR PLASTIC BOTTLES,CONTAINERS ETC AND 1 BIN FOR GREEN WASTE.

Yes, nearly all households in Australia have a separate recycling bin that is collected fortnightly.

This is the website of the country's largest recycler.

It's different depending on where you live. In some towns its the law, while in others its not, and then in others they dont even provide the possibilitity. In my old town in Bundaberg, you HAD to recylcle and if you didnt you would get a fine. But then I moved to Brisbane and in some areas depending on the council you dont have to.

Inner cities and public accomodations tend not to have separate bins as people get a bit careless away from home. But here in Canberra there are two for each household, one for recyclables - paper, cardboard, metals, glass, some plastics, this is collected every two weeks, the other is general stuff and collected every week. I notice some apartment blocks do not have recycling bins. One near me does, another a little further away does not. Don't ask me why.

The paper recycling project at my primary school began in the 1950s and the Scouts used to collect glass for recycling in the 1960s and 70s so it goes back a fair while.

yes we have recycling facilities. i don't know about how all the others states do it, but in south australia, when our waste rubbish is collected, our recycling products are also collected in the same garbage truck and sent to a recycling plant. in south australia there is a ten cent refund you get at recycling depots for each drink can, small milk carton and drink bottle you take in, to further encourage recycling.

Recycling is certainly encouraged in Australia, but it depends on where you live. You will not see recycling bins in the streets, but each house has these facilities to some extent.

In Melbourne, recycling is the responsibility of each city council. Some will provide a bin for household rubbish, another for garden clippings, and one for recycled material such as paper, glass, plastics. Other councils only provide a bin for household rubbish and a box for newspapers, glass and a limited type of plastic.

In the ACT we have a bin for household rubbish and a seperate one for recyling which can take all types of paper, virtually all plastics, and glass. Garden rubbish we need to take to the tip ourselves, or get someone to pick it up.

In Australia, bins are divided into three categories/colours:

* Red lid bins are for general, everyday rubbish
* Yellow lid bins are for recycling (all recyclables go in here)
* Green lid bins are for garden waste such as leaves and trimmings

Yes, households have three bins each. The LGA (Council City) I live in never had proper recycling bins in the past until 6 years ago where they implemented them.

Whoever thumbing down people should end up being a garbologist! Everyone has their own ways of explaining things!
