Can you tell me a good African/Black hair salon in Melbourne, Australia? |
I am African American and will be moving to Melbourne soon. I wear my relaxed hair with bonded extensions in it. I would be looking for a salon that can both put on a good relaxer and do really good extensions. Please make some recommendations! Thanks! |

in Australia all hairdresser are qualified
if they refused to cut your hair
YOU would be the first to cry and claim discrimination because you are an "African American" and all the world knows how quick your country is to sue anyone for anything
ASK the hairdresser can they cut if not can they recommend one |

I cant belive or the rants on racism here?? wtf??
Im sure the person asking the question probably just referred to African/Black hair salon coz they would specialise in the type of hair treatments specifically for african hair type...nothing to do with skin color ?? I somehow think that if this person were to walk into a salon run and operated by Asians (like in Box Hill) she should have a very very hard time getting what she wanted!
I have seen a salon in Chapel Street South Yarra that specialises African/Black hair types and braiding, extentions etc...sorry i cant remember the name of the place though :( |

Some of you people are really showing your ignorance! African/Black hair is very different from other hair and needs very special hairdressing expertise and products. We don't have very many people with African heritage here in Australia and that type of expertise is hard to come by. Angel is simply asking if anyone knows of a hairdresser in Melbourne with that expertise and the question has NOTHING to do with racism. |

Jeez, try and get a straight answer outta some people and they give you a lecture on apartheid! Anyway, Melbourne has some amazing cosmopolitan hairdressers, always has had. You won't have any trouble finding a hairdresser to suit you. Do what you'd do in any other city, when you get settled, look in the yellow pages, pick a few ads from salons that specialise in extensions, c.r's all that, than ring them, ask them the questions that need to be asked, then go and visit them. You're going to be happily surprised I think, Melbourne may turn out to be a whole lot more than you expected. I think you'll find that you don't have to go without anything. Melbourne can hold it's own, against just about any other city in the west, don't worry about that. I'm not biased, I don't even live in Melbourne, although I did for 6 years in the 80's(..I think ha ha) If you do have trouble finding anything, contact a Uni Student Body (any one of them), they won't care that you're not a student, they're used to giving directions to new arrivals, and they know where everything is! Melbourne people are pretty helpful as well, esp for big town folk, if you ask they'll tell you.
What are you lot on about? Afro's need special expertise to cut properly, the poor person doesn't want a black person's hairdresser, for goodness sake, just someone with some experience in cutting and styling afro's, which you gotta admit are pretty thin on the ground in Australia. Sheesh. |

go mandyj67!
Yes, i completely agree, i am an Australian of Anglo decent and have very straight hair, i have found asian hairdressers cut my hair better than "white" hairdressers, they just seem to have had more practice with straight hair. So it seems perfectly reasonable to me that some one who is African American would like to go to a hair dresser with experience with their type of hair.
Over the last couple of years there has been quite a few African Immigrants/refugees come to melbourne (same/similar hair type), so a good place to start looking for a hairdresser to suit your needs would be in suburbs where most of these immigrants have settled, i'd start looking in the suburbs with all the african restaurants.

aflumpire23 - you get 4 thumbs down because this question had nothing to do with race but with the type of hair the asker had, no we don't have apartide and she could quite happily walk into any hair dressers but not just any hair dresser would be able to fulfill the askers requirements. |

ha ha ha! I don't know much about hairdressing but even I know that African hair requires specialist care!
You could try Mama Africa, I think they are in Richmond which is only a short tram/train ride from the CBD. My flatmate (Who was Indian but grew up in South Africa - stunning looking girl!) used them. She used to get her hair braided but I think they do all sorts and they specialise in African hair |

we don't divide our hairdressers by race in Australia. As an African American you are free to travel to any hair salon in the country, whether they be White, Asian, black, whatever.
If you are looking for a hair salon that is owned by some Australians with African origin, or some African American immigrants, or some immigrants from Africa, you won't find many. The major minority group in Australia are from East/south East Asia, not Africa.
Why do you want a black hairdresser anyway? You must come from a really bad part of the US if you are only allowed to go to African American hairdressers.
Apartheid was in South Africa not Australia. |

Australia does not have Apartheid law.
ANY GOOD HAIRDRESSER CAN DO THE JOB YOU WANT (have i made that clear enough for a few people??)
EDIT: how the hell can I get 3 thumbs down for such a simple answer?? I am pretty sure that we dont have Apartheid law here - I am australian!!
gee some are f***** freaks on here |
