Cell phone companies in Sydney, Australia?

I'm from the USA and I'm moving to Sydney for school. I'm currently under contract with Sprint, but when I went into Sprint and asked if they service Australia the girl couldn't even answer my question! Does Sprint service Australia, and also what company would you recomment for the Sydney area!? I'll be interested in an international plan so that I can talk to family and friends back home. Thank you!

Nope.. Sprint does not work there.
Best bet is to get a local GSM phone there.

Mrs M
No sprint here.

We have Telstra, Optus, Virgin Mobile, Vodaphone, 3 mobile.

You will have to start calling it a mobile phone too. We don't have "cell phones" here in Australia.

Philip K
As far as I know Sprint does not service Australia.

The Main Carriers which own their own network are:

Telstra (Originally the government telco - much like AT&T)
Optus
Vodafone
3

There are other mobile companies which exist on their own and have their own pricing deals, but use another carrier. Some of these include

Virgin (Optus)

If you want a recommendation, All of them are good. I currently use Vodafone, and I've never had a problem. Virgin was also good when I was with them.

All will cover the Sydney area and all the main cities and towns very well. Telstra will cover regional areas a bit better than the other networks (i.e. the outback) but they are more expensive than the others, and don't have very good plans.

I've been with Telstra for years and never had a problem with them. In Fact I think they ar the best. What you need to call the States is a calling card. I use Daybreak to phone New Zealand and England . Only costs about 5 cents a minute. but you need to use it on a home phone or call box as it would cost your mobile cell price on top if you used it from that. There are different calling cards. The Coles supermarket sells one and many News agents have a variety of them http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGklgrVhFJ6z0B_5hXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTByZ3RtN3J1BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMgRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkAw--/SIG=12j155nn1/EXP=1225959339/**http%3a//www.bestphonecards.com.au/CardsList.aspx%3fCategoryID=23

Telstra Vodaphone Optus Virgin oh and FYI we call them mobile phones here so don't ask about a cell phone as people won't know what your talking about.

what you need is global roaming from Sprint which will allow you to use your service in Australia by logging on to an Australian network while you are here / you will need to ensure that you phone is compatible to use in Australia

in Australian we have currently
Telstra
Optus
Virgin Mobile
Vodafone
3 mobile

you are going to all different answer from people who use one service or another there just as good or as bad as one another

if you want to use a phone here get a cap plan or pre paid is the way to go cheap and easy no expensive bills pay as you go

Your sprint service won't work there, you can get local Australian SIM card even before you leave USA & use it while you are there.. check the link below, best thing is that you will pay your bills in local USD currency, rather than Australian dollars + you can distribute your Australian phone number to your friends & family even before you leave them.

Hope it helps!

Hello there,
Sprint does exist in Australia. I haven't even heard of them.

The major mobile networks in Australia include:

* Telstra
* Optus
* Vodafone
* 3
* Boost, Virgin (Uses the Optus network).

All of them cover metropolitan cities well so I wouldn't be too worried about which network you use for this reason. Instead, I would worry more about the pricing and the rates.

Since you go to school, I'd assume you're a teenager/young adult. Optus appeals to many people in this group as they offer some very unbelievable deals with their prepaid service. Their coverage is also quite good. I personally use Optus prepaid (previously with Vodafone but don't like them as much). You should check out this link for their rates and offers: https://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=Template_wRHS&FP=/personal/mobile/prepaidmobile/callingoffersandrates&site=personal

Telstra offers the widest coverage but it won't be necessary if you don't travel much or go to work. They are also expensive.

Hope this helps!

Hey, Used to live in Sydney(one month ago). You have four main companies for mobile phones(not cell phones in Aus, better get used to it!)

Telstra-the national server, quite expensive, but has the best australia wide coverage.

Vodaphone-Good for pre-paid phone cards, not so good for account phones.

Optus-Nearly the same as vodaphone

3 mobile- The fastest growing mobile company in Aus. Good because no matter where in Australia you call from the mobile charges are the same.

If I was wanting to call internationally I would probably buy a prepaid mobile which you could pick up for under $100 US. then just top up with phone credit when you need to. Buy international phone cards for much cheaper rates than what the phone companies offer. Also maybe think about buying a Skype enabled phone for almost no extra cost to get basically free calls to other skype enabled phones and computers.
Hope this helps, enjoy your stay in Sydney, the most beautiful city in the world(well thats what i think)

Ashley
I am from australia and i think i can help.
Here are mobile phone companies (when you come to australia make sure you call it a mobile phone)
*Telstra -The main company although most aussies wouldn't recommend it.

*Optus- The other big comapany, it is pretty reliable.

*Votaphone
