Considering A Vacation in Sydney but I Have Chronic Arachnophobia? |
Hello Everyone,
I know this sounds really silly but I'm considering a trip to Sydney for holiday and I've heard that you all have some pretty huge arachnids there. I've read about the huntsman being really common and I know I'll probably pass out if I see one. Are they very common in the city? I've also heard of the funnel web and huge daddy-long-legs. I'm sorry for the stereotype. It's not my intention at all, but the last nature show I saw had a funnel web under a book at the local library! Otherwise there isn't a Aussie that I've met that I didn't like. Great people! I'm so anxious to visit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
The Arachnophobe |

We have people who suffer from arachnophobia here too.
I have a friend who is absolutely freaked out by spiders and she copes just fine.
I think you may have been watching too many wildlife programmes. I have no idea why these frightening wildlife shows are made about us and shown overseas.
They put people off re: visiting us.
I'm terrified by snakes and if I didn't know the truth (you rarely if ever see one) and I didn't live here, I'd be just like you and never visit.
Truthfully, we are not buried under mountains of spiders or snakes.
I think you should visit us and when you do have a great time. |

I travel regularly to Australia and usually spend a few days in Sydney, I've never seen a spider in the city. Now if you're going to the tropics that's a another story.

Ok i have lived in Sydney my WHOLE life and i have NEVER seen a funnel web ever, i have only ever seen 1 huntsman and it was dead and daddy long legs are these tiny little stick things that cant even hurt you. Trust me, you will be safe in Sydney! |

to see a spider you will have to go looking for them & look hard
THEY ARE NOT EVERYPLACE |
|

He's gone fishing.

Dont worry about the spiders, the cockroaches eat them, lol. jk. Don't worry about the spiders, they are not as bad as you think. If you go looking for spiders you will find them. Huntsmans are good spiders, they eat the bugs and my mates pet one killed a funnelweb in a glass tank (Freaky huh), (I hate spiders more than snakes, I would use a snake as a stick to kill a spider, lol). Come out to the bush if you want to see some big ones, we breed them big out here. |

You need not worry.
Those documentaries always put alot of emphasis on our spiders and snakes. But it's not all bad.
I live in the bush (not the city where all the cockroaches are) just north of Sydney, and I've had more possums, kangaroos and goannas in my yard than I've ever seen of spiders and snakes in my whole suburb.
I used to have a huntsman living in my car when I lived in western Sydney and I hate them. But they are all legs and about the size of your hand. The daddy long legs are completely non-venemous to humans and I've never seen one even as big as the palm of your hand.
I don't know where you're from, but you probably have more spiders there than you will come across in Sydney!
Hope you don't mind cockroaches though, coz they are rampant in the city! *shudders*
Enjoy your stay! |

Sydney? If you're staying in the city, or highly populated areas.. You will rarely
They usually hide, and are out of site. I live in Sydney, I've never seen a funnel web in my life.. Never seen a dangerous spider more than 5 times in my 18 years of living. |
