If you want to exclude Australia and New Zealand, continental Australia has no other countries.
Regardless of that, New Zealand isn't part of continental Australia anyways so whoever told you otherwise is a fool.
I can't believe how little knowledge some people have about Australia and how certain they are that they are correct. One of the pitfalls of Answers, unfortunately :(. |

Australia is a country all by itself. New Zealand is nearby, but it is a completely separate country too.
Countries nearest to Australia are Papua New Guinea, East Timor, Indonesia, and New Zealand.
The states and territories of Australia are
New South Wales
Queensland
Victoria
South Australia
Tasmania
Western Australia
Northern Territory
Australian Capital Territory
Also Australia administers a large part of Antarctica
Hope this helps |

The only country on the continent named Australia is Australia. Like Iceland, Australia's boundaries are all sea boundaries, but we have many islands, one is Tasmania.
New Zealand is a separate nation state. Ignore the remarks about the Hutt River Province- it is merely a tax dodge - it is not actually a separate nation state. |

Only Australia is in continental Australia. New Zealand is a nearby country. Other island nations are in the area, but not part of Australia. I hope that answers you question. :-) Cheers!! |

No, Australia is a country and a continent, with no other countries on it.
New zealand is another country that is not a continent, it is made up of two islands that lie to the east.
Indonesia is also very close, but that lies to the north and it also a whole lot of islands. No country apart from Australia lies on the Australian continent. |

There are 2 countries upon the continent of Australia,
Hutt River Principality is the only other country on the continent of Australia, but otherwise the rest of the continent is The Commonwealth of Australia.
Other micro-nations had been set up like Principality of Marlborough, Independent State of Rainbow Creek, and Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands, but they no longer press claims of nationhood.
The embassies for foreign countries could be technically micro countries, I suppose, as well as the US Military bases. |
