Gawd no, we're only just recovering from the damage that stupid film did to our image overseas. Crocodile Dundee was a hideous parody of Australian men and culture in general. It was after all made in Hollywood, not really known for factual accuracy. Crocodile Dundee was the cause of the longest cultural cringe in history. That, and that oh so annoying 'shrimp on the barbie' line, are likely to get you punched in the throat in Australia. 'The Castle' is a little better, bearing in mind that it is a comedy, not a doco. If you really want to see a film that depicts Australian life realistically you could try Little Fish. It's a pretty cool movie, and it shows a more realistic view of the country. Other less sentimental, less 'Holyywoodized' films that show a more realistic Australia are 'Candy' and 'Two Hands', both of these films have Heath Ledger in them at opposite ends of his career, The Fringe Dwellers, Rabbit Proof Fence and Romper Stomper which has a young Russel Crowe in it. These are all excellent films, hardly a beach in sight, very Australian nonetheless. Have a go at watching a couple, you will probably be suprised, Australia is pretty much like everywhere else. |

The Castle is more true to life. The place where it was filmed is not far from where I am.. |

Mick Dundee is an over-exaggeration of the "bushie" type of Australian. Similar to Dame Edna being built on the image of a 60s Australian housewife.... then taken waaaay over the top!
I think most Aussies found The Castle so funny because everyone knows someone who's like one or more of the family members. They're not your typical Australian family.... but they're not completely out of the realms of possibility either! |

crocodile dundee does not represent the typical australian... i have never met anyone who is like that, really
the castle is a much more accurate depiction of a typical australian family (but of course it is a comedy movie and therefore there has been exaggerated a bit for comic effect) but it actually is quite similar.. i know a family quite like that. |

He doesn't. Australians don't talk or behave like that. It is just a movie, not real life.
The Castle represents your typical bogan family. Simple people living a simple existance. Again it is just a movie, not all Australians look or behave like this.
Don't be so stereotypical. |

Hi.
None of them represent Australia.
They are only comedy films .....
I've never seen The Castle or Crocodile Dundee.
I really don't like the way our country is portrayed ..It is completly false.
However a lot of people enjoyed these films .
I don't ..but it is a reference of what films we all enjoy... |
