Do Australians feel bad for taking over a foreign country?

and such an ancient country/continent with so much sacred history/culture?

You've got the wrong end of the stick girl.

What books / news articles have you been reading?

please explain?!?
exactly what country do you come from????
& I'm sure your ancestors took over a more ancient history/culture. unless you come from africa & jumped down from a tree
get off your superiority bum & start thinking at the other end.

No,why should we?
what country doesnt have history and sacred culture?
Where might you be from? have you studied your countries history?

No. Do the descendants of the Visigoths fell bad for taking over northern Spain? Do the descendants of the Franks regret taking control of France from the Gauls? Do the descendants of the Saxons regret taking control of Britain from the Celts? How about the descendants of the Magyars taking control of Hungary etc etc etc.

Australia has a history but is unwritten. Therefore it may as well not exist. As for "sacred", one respects the sacred sites of other people but is not overawed by them.

I have no tolerance for the "Black Armband" view and am not the least interested in so called "reconciliation".

I am an Australian and I don't recall taken over any country.

You really need to think before making sweeping statement like that.

And where did you come from by the way? Is your country sinless?

english guy 1985
they should not feel guilty one bit

'guilt' for historical events is a stupid concept anyway

and if the English/British hadn't taken Australia it would almost certainly have been taken by the French, so be grateful we did!

imagine Home and Away if they all spoke French!!

NO! Where the hell are you from? You must be from the only place in the world that didn't take over another country (I don't think there is one actually). If you are American, the French, English, Dutch and any number of people took that land from the Native Americans...slaughtering them as they went. Are you proud of that? They had so much sacred culture/history as well you know. If you are from England...you would be descended from the Romans, Saxons or other ancient people that took England!
Don't try to judge us and think you are better than us!
The 'taking' of Australia was WAY before any of us were born so why should we feel bad?
I love my country and wouldn't want to live anywhere else so I am glad our ancestors settled here. Get a life and look at the settling of your country before you point fingers at us!

Taking over ? That is an odd way of putting it , seems to me that England as a country would feel guilty and not the people who were born there . It went from a harsh Penal Colony to one of the most well ran and organized countries on this earth... if England didn't take it over then some other country would have and I really doubt they would be where they are today . Every country that is developed has been taken over . Every country that has not is in a State of disrepair.
Australia is a good place and have their own culture ... you shouldn't criticize it because of things that happened over 200 years ago.

Yes, just as Americans must feel badly for their treatment of Indians.....

alyie_cat
Now i don't know where some people come up with this crap, what country's have Australia ever taken over??
now in my opinion we only get involved in other country's battles ( like USA ) this is a question you should ask many other country's but its not a question you need Australian to answer:)

NOT at all,why would i ?,Australia is what it is because of the different people from all walks of life making it the great country that it is,yes the aboriginal people were the first and have their own way's and beliefs but when it comes to making Aussie what it is today i don't think they have contributed a hell of a lot,If white settlers didn't come and settle on this land then as sure as the tide will come in and go out some other people maybe the( Japanese during ww2) definately would have it was inevitable.

Also seeing as your in Aussie DO YOU FEEL BAD?and if you do feel so bad why not move on to another country where you can feel better about yourself

kllr.queen
I agree with Mark H.

You have really got the red neck fringe going on this one. Please do not assume from the comments posted on this that all Australians hate Aboriginals. However you need to research more before making such a generalised and judgemental statement.

skattered0077
i agree with "Fatty"...

the aboriginals in Australia have no culture any more, they are way to busy at Centrelink getting an advance on their next pension so they can get to the bottle-o for some cask...

coming from a place in Northern Australia where many communities are within a few hours drive the city sometimes is over run with drunk aboriginals asking for money or ciggaretts or what is left of the packet of chips or soft drink that you are having...

of course if you say no then you are called every name under the sun...

never did i take over a foreign country...i was born here as were my parents, thier parents and their parents before them...

so where exactly am i foreign to??? Australia is my home and my country and it will always be that way...

just wondering where you are from????
