if we hated americans then do you think that ur president and our prime minister are so close and we helped americans out after that huge cyclone and sept 11. you will be treated as any one else, people will be more interested in u because to us you will have an accent, if people give u shi t they will just call you a yank or something don't get offened because its a joke and if someone says something nasty because ur an american then thats just one person

Sort of. I for one am kinda anti-american.
It's not a racist kind of hate as many people would make out, but rather a geopolitical hatred. You'll probably bump into many that say that they like Americans but hate America. I don't see how this is possible (as the state is composed of it's people) but it serves as a nice kind of simplicstic generalisation.
A lot of it's the naivety of people like Jongoinsdc who doesn't realise why America is the most hated nation on Earth. Australians get pissed off at injustice whether they're victim to it or not. We've generally gotten off lightly as far as American foreign policy goes but there have been occasions... mention "ug boots" to an Australian... not that big a deal but there is resent there all the same.
Nevertheless people in the city are taught tolerence, which can be a bit fake and put on at times, so you'll be either welcomed warmly or at the very least tolerated there.
In Byron you'll find people'll be laid back and not really care one bit about the international political scene. They'll be easy going but also frank with you. There's a few stereotypical American traits that people'll find anoying but you're going to college over here as a learner rather than the big shot expert so I reckon everyone'll get on fine with you. That you're coming all the way here to study'd definitely earn you some respect. If you take the time to observe how people relate and ask questions then it'll earn you even more.
Expect to have the occasional person to rant on a bit like me, doesn't mean they hate you, they might even consider you as a good mate.

Aussies like to make fun of well almost anyone and thing really so please don't take any jokes/harsh comments about your countries stereotypical values as a personal insult. Life is short and is a lot less depressing if you don't take everything seriously. A good indication of how we feel is that if we didn't like you we probably wouldn't bother giving you any attention at all.

i went there over sping break and as long as you dont were a bush rocks shirt youll be good then again i think it would be pretty much impossible to even find a shirt of that evilness. so ya they are prolly the nicest peeps around. we would get lost and my dads kinda a loudmouth american but people would stop and offer to take us to the place so ya its all good

no i don't hate yanks don't like the smart-*** or arrogant ones but not to many of them most i have met are Ok it is fun to pull their legs & feed them o load of crap they almost allways bite have a good time at uni

Aussie's secretly think americans are big mouth show offs but we pretty much accept anyone! Everyone here will make you feel welcome. But its called university (uni) here, not college. & Byron Bay is awesome!

No we don't hate Americans, I don't think we really hate anyone. Sometimes we might hate what someone does, but not the person, just the act.
I think we are pretty accepting so come over and have a great time.

I don't think so. I am an American but have worked with many many Australians in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the Phillipines. Mostly in Indonesia and I found them to be some of the finest people in the world. Australians as a rule just like having fun to much to hate anyone. Treat them the way you would like to be treated and you will discover just how great they are. Incidentally, I am going to Mt. Isa, up in Queensland, for the rodeo the week of August 6 to 12. I have a couple of Aussie friends from the Professional Bull Riders that will be competing in the events there. Another point, to dispell the TV rumor in the US, FOSTERS is not how you say beer in Australia. They just have too many good ones to categorize.

No.. they don't hate American's. They love to spew a few yarns (tell stories) and joke around alot. Once you get past being called a Yank (Americans are Yanks), you'll be right, mate..

I don't think they do. I married an Aussie and I am American and was treated with nothing but kindness and respect when I was in Australia.

I'll be honest,,hey,,a lot of Aussies do hate you yanks,for the simple reason of your culture invading our country,,from the rapper clothes the kids are wearing to the "bro speak",,to the divisions and precincts,,what happened to our slang and our areas or our suburbs,,we no longer have terms for school but semesters,and I for one certainly dont want your gun laws !
But all said and done ,,you come to vsit us here one on one,,you will always be made to feel more than welcome,,we dont shut the door on anyones face.

I've been knowing a few Australians through online chat, and they haven't communicated any hatred towards me, or U.S. :)

As an Australian I can say that you will be most welcome. We are very friendly and you will find, if you have a good sense of humour, that you will fit right in. Byron Bay is a beautiful spot to be, was there last year. Have a great time, mate.

For starters i'd like to ask why did you decided on Byron Bar as opposed to the main cities (Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth). I'll start of by saying that I'm a Brisbane born boy, who has travelled a fair bit of the world (mainly EU but also Canada and America).

Anyways Byron Bay (as opposed to the main cities) is more highly populated with the 'reds'. That is, the hegomonic class (white men with power etc etc). In byron bay you'll most probably find that a lot of people are actually support the war on iraq (im assume thats the reason for dislike of americans). So you'll be fine.
