Do Australians still resent the old colonial power?

No resentment here but agree with Ozmaniac about the queen and flag, it's time we became a Republic and yes it's true we did have a referendum in '99 when Warmonger Bush's mate little Johnny was PM but us Republicans were too smart to fall for Johnny's method of selection, now we have given John the boot and kevin 07 is the man, kev's his own man and is a Republican so need I say more.

GUY your judgement on Ozmaniac is indeed a very ignorant one as the true owners of this land would agree with her opinion.

In my experience, Australians live for the present and the future rather than whinge about the past.

I don't resent it, but it's time we moved on. I don't know anyone who doesn't want Australia to become a republic. I know people who voted against the last referendum on that issue, but only because the proposal was for a government-appointed head of state rather than an elected head of state.

Whats done is done we can't take back the past so we look to the future and try to learn from our mistakes

Some of us do. I'm one and won't be satisfied until we get rid of the foreign queen and the foreign flag in the corner of our flag.

molly
No way but I bet they wish they had left the convicts in Britain and relocated to Australia instead.

LOL are you kidding, we live in the best country in the world..we are happy our ancestors stole a loaf of bread and ended up here

Mate we ARE the colonial power. Me and my ancestors back to 1820 are transplants onto this land. Have a look at the skin colour of all the leaders, have a look at the flag, have a look at the coinage. Have a look at hte life expectanciesof indigenous people. Not matter how much some of us love it, and some abuse it with inappropriate farming practices etc, we don't really belong here until we restore to the original owners well being and an equal place in the new society or the opportunity to be as they wish to be ... and end being under the flag of another nation state.

James K
Hey our old colonial power is what got us to where we are today.
If it wasn't for our close ties we would be a developing country.

Australia has a huge rivalry with all the Commonwealth Nations. The rivalry between England is not resentment.

The Queen is still our Queen, even though we don't seem to care these days. We had a referendum in 98 (i think) about Australia becoming a republic or not. Only 44% of the population wanted to become a republic.

I reckon. It comes through in sporting events when on occasions they loose. They come across as really bad losers against the UK

Ozmaniac:- When are you going to give the Aboriginals THEIR land back. The British stole it & you still occupy it. Your living on stolen land mate..................It is just that you mentioned foriegers in YOUR country when really it belongs to the Aboriginals & I have a feeling you are not Aboriginal.

Holly:- Why would my statment be Ignorant. It is a brief but accurate statment. The country belongs to the Aboriginals. No ifs or buts. The settlers are foriegers in the Aboriginal country. Yes my statement may not be sensitive to the issues, it is rather flippent & not particually well thought out in the time I had. But there is nothing worse than someone who looks no further than the End of thier nose.
