As far as I know, any foreigner visiting Australia needs a tourist visa. For people from some countries, the visa (the so-called ETA) may be issued electronically. |

It depends which country you are passport holder of.
Of course, if you are a Australian passport holder entry is almost guaranteed. If you are New Zealand passport holder with no criminal history, then you will easily gain access to Australia without a visa indefinately and have authority to work. Also, if you are a New Zealander, you can skip the foreigners line in immigration, and go in the same line as Australians. But, for most other nationalities, a visa is required. |

you must have a tourist visa, and you can not work while in australia |

If you want to take a vaction in Australia you will need a tourist visa, not a work visa. Unless your passport is an Australian passport, you should assume that you will need a visa (there are exceptions, but not many). |

With the exception of New Zealand citizens (who only need a current passport)... You need both:
A) a current passport with at least 6 months validity from the date you expect to return home
and
B) a visa. If you only intend on vacationing and not working then all you need is a tourist visa, which depending where you are from can be either free or cost $20. They generally last for 3 months but you can get a 12 month one. If you wish to work while here then you need a working holiday or work and holiday visa, for this there are more rules and regs then with a standard tourist visa.
One tip, if you have any criminal convictions then contact your local Australian embassy before applying. Here is the site with all the info you need http://www.immi.gov.au
You also need sufficient funds for your stay. They usually ask for $5,000 plus funds for or a return ticket. Depending how long you are staying will depend how much you need to have, this doesn't need to be cash, it can be in your savings account but you need a bank statement as proof. If you are staying with family or friends they may need to contact them as proof if you don't have much funds available to you. This is only if they check, majority of people don't get looked at but it is random so best to be prepared.
Hope you enjoy your trip to Australia. |
