Most Americans have trouble naming our own leaders, why would you think we know yours, much less have a preference?

The real question should be would Americans even know who Kevin Rudd or John Howard were if you asked them ... I'm going to tell you right now Americans (and I am one) are pretty culturally ignorant. Except for a very small percentage of the population they tend to know absolutely nothing about anything outside of the United States. In fact, in California (my home state) only about 20% of people polled knew where the capital of California is located -- and they live here.

I remember watching an Austrian comedy program once while I was staying in Berlin for a symposium, and the host of the show wanted to prove that Americans were culturally stupid, so he actually went around to six major American cities and said he was John Howard (this was about two years ago) -- for one thing this guy was in his mid-twenties, full head of hair, and had a noticeable German accent in English. He would go around and introduce himself accordingly, " Hi, I'm John Howard the Prime Minister of Australia ..." and people would believe him because they had no idea who the Prime Minister of Australia was. It showed about 40 people, and only two said "You're not John Howard!" ... which just proves my point.

Personally, I like Kevin Rudd better ...

Edit: These are just a few uniform comments I get from average Americans on a shockingly common basis.

1. You lived in Brazil! So, you speak Spanish pretty well then ...? (the official language of Brazil is Portuguese).

2. So, did you ever smoke any marijuana in Denmark? (They're thinking of the Netherlands/Holland -- Marijuana is just as illegal in Denmark as it is in the US)

3. Sweden is the north pole. (Actually, except for the extreme north of Sweden there are four distinct seasons .. winter being the only one with snow).

4. All of Brazil is Amazonian rain forrest, indians are everywhere, and most people live in huts. (Brazil has numerous divergent climate zones from desert to rain rain forest, and most cities are just as developed as anyplace you can find in the US and Europe).

5. Everyone in Sweden is named either Hans or Inga, people have pet Polar Bears, and its not uncommon to live in igloos. (No, I'm not exaggerating here ... you'd be surprised how many Americans have actually said this to me).

6. *the coup de gras* ... "Denmark! I love New Zealand!"

John Howard. It was nice to have an ally of the USA for a while instead of an ally for France and the EU and their way of doing things. Australia has some major challenges in the 21st century with the Asian migration coming. With the population exploding in southeast Asia the burden could be worse than what we put up with in the USA with nonstop illegal immigration from Central and South America. Good luck with the Midnight Oil government!!!

holly
Americans don't even know who they are, why would you even ask them?

Regwah
As long as there bent over, it doesn't matter.
That's terrible, bad taste, I'm an Aussie so I don't know.
Rudds no dud though, he got my vote.

Who Cares, They Don't Have The Vote In Our Election!
We'd All Prefer Anyone But Bush In The Whitehouse But Again We Don't Get That Choice.

I voted liberal. I have a mortgage and I'm scared interest rates will rise astronomically once Labor is in government.

However, then issue that clinched it for me was Kevin Rudd visiting a strip club. What kind of man visits a strip club? What must he think of women if he participates in the degrading of the female identity by the perversion of that identity and it's marketing back to society as normal?

Naah, didn't get my vote. I'd rather be chained to a sink than be forced to gyrate around a pole.

Vicki R
I really don't care what Americans think about our PM. Kevin Rudd wins the day anyway.
