Most of the food produced from New Zealand is naturally grown. Meat in particular is raised on an all grass diet outside in the fresh air. Whereas in the US, most animals are feed on grains, injected with hormones, and housed in barns. That is why in New Zealand you get the large portion sizes of the steaks or other meats. Our seafood for example is larger in size due to our small population, where we dont strip the ocean floor for our own greedy purposes, therefore allowing the seafood to reproduce. Most New Zealand'ers stable diet is fresh Meat, Veges or Seafood. Maori food also influences the culinary delights of the average kiwi ie: (hangi - food cooked in the earth) You cannot say that New Zealand isn't diverse in the exotic or culinary food, as we are known as a multi-cultural society. I think its a bit demented to think or expect New Zealand's food to also comprise of the food you would expect in America. We are not a miniature USA, you are in a completely different country. Its like going to Scot Base and asking if they have a burger king. |

I think so. A guy I met last year from there said they eat more protein in the form of meat. The steaks are heartyier, meaning larger in portion size and height. Plus he said they eat more naturally grown fruits and vegetables. Thats what he said he missed about his "home" while being here training with the military. |

Most NZers diet used to be fresh fish meat fruit etc. We are buying more takeaways than ever before. It wont come as a shock to americans that the polynesians have a lot of health problems, mainly weight related and are very fond of KFC.
The average meal of the people I know is still meat and three veg. Pies are popular, particularly the palm of your hand sized ones you buy at petrol stations and supermarkets which are hot and ready to eat. The most common are: steak and gravy, mince, chicken and veg, steak and kidney, mince with a potato top and steak and cheese - I eat a lot of pies.
KFC, Burger King, McDonalds, Wendys, Subway, Burger Wisconsin etc are all over the place. Pizza is also popular and we have Pizza Hut too as well as local chains. Ham and pineapple is one of the most popular toppings.
Chinese food, especially sweet and sour pork is another common takeaway and restaurant option.
Lamb is cheaper here, along with mutton and hogget. Salted roast lamb with roast veges is still a popular meal.
I don't ever recall having had hangi food, no one I know has ever cooked food in a hangi, if it's cooked outside it's cooked on the bbq or large meat goes on a spit. Occassionally I've had smoked food, normally seafood though. |

I think its very eccletic really...especially in the main centres f NZ where the variety of different resteraunts from different places is quite high.
There is a reasonalby strong Asiain infulence in the food, but we like to "mix things up" and take ideas from lots of places (fusion)..... |

Alot of the foods are similar - Italian, Chinese, Indian, Burgers etc. I think Fish and Chips is still the main takeout. What you don't get here are the wonderful sandwiches like Rubens or Philly Steak Cheese or things like Wedding Soup. Other foods not found here are eastern European foods like Pierogies. I have to make mine from scratch. You'll find Tex-Mex not at spicy as in the USA.
Hope this helps. have a great time if you're travelling here. |

Only in the south. We eat things that they don't eat any where else! We eat anything we can run down or dig up. When we kill a hog we eat every thing but the squeal and if we could catch it we would eat that too! |
