Yes of course. When you leave a country you need to have identification to show who you are - this is in the form of a passport. When you leave ANY country in the world you need to have a passport to leave and then again to gain entry into the other country.
New Zealand is a separate country from Australia, so yes, you will need a passport.

Yes NZ is another country, so you need a passport to travel there.
You can pick up application forms for Australian passport at any Aust. Post Shop or download one of their website
(they don't send out blank ones on the net, what you do is fill in some details online then they print it and mail it out to you)
