It is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturi... If you want to know what it means in English, you'd better google it; my Maori isn't much good. It's the longest place name in the world, and it's on the east coast of the North Island. |

I think the song 'I've been everywhere man' is a lot if NZ place names strung together. I know what you are meaning and it has been used in commercials, lately in a McDonalds ad for Kiwi Burgers. He sings all the place names in one breath and because there is a number of Maori names it sounds like one name. I thought it was Brendon Doogan that sung it orginally? May pay to google that name? |

It's hard to tell what you're asking about, but if it's what I think it is, the answer is contained in 'Zee Prime's' response to you.
Just to add to that response, the song was composed and sung by Peter Cape in the late 1950's and is available on Kiwi Records, distributed by AH and AW Reed.
The full words are at the page shown below.
I googled to get this info and was surprised at how little reference there is to the place, the song, the publishing house (Reeds) and the author.

In not knowing the title you were referring to I concluded from all the information in your question and the answers up to then, that you were thinking of Taumatawhaka.....
BUT, it could be that you may be thinking of "I've Been Everywhere, Man." written and sung in 1960 by an Australian, Lucky Starr. The original version was about Australia only.
He produced an EP record of four versions of the song with words relevant to four countries, New Zealand and Australia being 2 of them.
Brendan Dugan and others have recorded the New Zealand version of it, and as far as I know, Howard Morrison has not - not yet, anyway. |
