From the way you describe it, New Zealand sounds like a great place to settle down.

I think it's a lot like Tasmania. It is more relaxed and less fact paced then out cities.

It too is a young country, Australia is behind compared to the US as well. I don't think they are backward, just not in front.

I'm a kiwi and I completely agree. And I saw it coming a LONG time ago.

Auckland is a problem. Sure it's their city (it ain't really NZ in case you didn't notice), but it gives the rest of the country a bad name. People there are in this odd denial complex and hold this pretense that their city is this modern international city that the world envies. And yet they are completely suburban in their outlook and attitude.

But even so, the entire country is very backward. There's no mixers on the taps, they build the same poorly insulated non-centrally heated houses in sub-arctic Invercargill as in sub-tropical Russell. Thanks to past governments there was almost nothing built after 1984 except Auckland since 1999.

And yes, the social morays are lagging too. And around Auckland there's this insular idea that NZ is a leader in social progress but it is ridiculous. The truth is NZ is quite casually racist in general and narrow-minded.

That's not to say I don't like NZ or anything. I've just had my eyes opened to the obvious. Despite the backwardness it is still a nice place on the whole.

EDIT: Actually I would say Wellington's the most MODERN city in NZ (although more backward Christchurch is still my favourite).
But Wellington's still a bit backward.

There might be some backward area in NZ, but in fact, generally speaking NZ is not a backward country at all.

Yeah. It sort of does look like a country that is slow-paced and backwards. But their films are even more "forward" than the Hollywood films.

Have you seen Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Last Samurai, Narnia, Heavenly Creatures? NZ made these films. The special effects in those films are made by the Kiwis. Now, WETA (NZ effects company) is working on James Cameron's new film, Avatar.

With their special effects industry, NZ is much more forward than Australia. Our special effects companies aren't that advanced like the American and the Kiwis' company.

NZ isn't backward! It's just not way up top with other countries, its a young country and is still adapting... not as much as other countries though... and we find the fashion here normal, its what everyone wheres here so we don't really need much more...

So what is so wrong with not being the " same " as the so called advanced or " modern " world. Being the best at what you are is far more important, Kiwis excel in all sporting contests all around the world, Proven leaders in a vast collection of feilds from academic to literary, Kiwis are proud of their Rugby team the ' All Blacks ' but there are many other avenues where we can hold our heads high and stick out our chests and say we did it our way.

That's why when an Aussies say Tasmania its the closest thing Australia has in common with NZ.

It means Tassie is on par with NZ in the sense that its a backwater in the middle of no where.
