Do you think that flights between NZ and Aust should be domestic?

I think potentially it is a fantastic idea. There are many arrangements/common borders type rules between countries which are completely separate government entities. US - Canada and Ireland and the UK are the two biggest examples.

My understanding is that immigration - and at some point even possibly customs - could be done at the point of departure. Info is already shared between the countries on many issues btw. So, thinking about it practically, you get all the 'procedural' stuff sorted in NZ (or Australia) then you get to simply jump on an aeroplane and walk off at the end. The possibility of even arriving at a domestic terminal (often less busy) or a terminal which doesn't require extra customs and immigration staff are endless.

At this stage, my understanding is that the customs procedures for biosecurity would still be done but long term even this could be done at the point of departure. I think it's got potential to be a great idea.

What a stupid question... NO!

Sacha...
no I dont, as they are two different countries. I mean if they make flights between nz and aus domestic, why dont they just make flights from nz to fji domestic, or flights from canada to usa domestic etc. I mean where do they stop?

Only when NZ and Australia unite.
They are separate countries so by definition international travel.

No.
Hell I even reckon flights between Tasmania and the mainland should be international!

no, not unless we are to merge as 1 country.
If flights to NZ become domestic, the cost of operating those flights will be spread over the cost of all other domestic flights (making them more expensive)
There is also the issue of drug trafficing and illeagal behaiviours. Domestic flights have less stringent rules and i fear that this could be exploited by criminals.
