Does Australia have VAT or GST?

Additional Details
add
thanks,
and believe me it's not the same thing,
VAT is the mother of all taxes!
It's usually charged on everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, electricity, phone bill, profit from the sale of your house, hospital bills, funeral costs etc. etc. anything that the government can think of...and they will.

be very thankful you don't have VAT!!

We have a GST.
The GST is already included in prices that are advertised - not added after(like I found in the US).

It's the same thing but here we call it GST (goods & services tax) The rate is lower, VAT is 17.5% but GST **so far** is only 10%.

We have a GST at the rate of 10%. It is not levied on fresh food, medicines and a small number of other things.

We have a GST of 10% in Australia.

In full, it stands for Goods and Services Tax, which was introduced by the Howard Government.

It's charged on everything we pay for.

ELLE
Australia has GST thanks to John Howard when he got elected all those years ago. So whoever voted for him back then - this is all your fault!!!

down_under_lover_forever2006
Yes, they have it since 2000.

But the Aussies are luckier than we Germans because our rate is a lousy 19% and 7% on unprepared food such as milk and bread! And this sucks!
