Does Australia like Americans?

The reason I ask is because my boyfriend and I are considering moving there. I was curoius as to how we would be treated.

Australians do not on the whole support or like America's policies. Likewise, as a generalisation we find Americans to be obnoxious and completely ill informed about the wider world. That said, any American who ventures outside of the States and takes a moment to understand and appreciate other cultures, especially our own, is given credit and afforded the same respect as anyone else. If you come here and carry on endlessly about how great America is though, expect to be told to piss off back there.

orangefrostie
If you're polite and not a braggart, you should be just fine. Sorry, but as a rule, Americans are NOT well-liked in many places. That's being extremely blunt, but true nonetheless. This is particularly true in Europe.

Australians treat everyone as they find them.
If you come with the right attitude you will be warmly welcomed.
I guess some Americans may have a bad experience here as they can be loud and overbearing rather than wanting to fit in and enjoy the laid back lifestyle.
Bring your sense of humour and learn to laugh at yourself, we do it all the time.

Caroline
Americans who travel are fine, it is those who believe a round the world trip involves visiting all the states in America who are disliked in other countries. Australians will treat you well, don't worry, we are an easy going, friendly bunch.

DakotaNZ
It's all down to attitude. Most places in the world don't like Americans because in general they act as though they are superior to other nationalities. So long as you are kind and treat them as you would expect to be treated, and don't brag about everything in America being so much better, you will be fine.

I got drunk with an American on Saturday, top bloke. We just dont like stupid, loud, bigoted people, no matter where they`re from.

i wasn't going to answer this until i read all the "try to be nice" answers..........Truth is, Oz can't stand yanks! (like most of the world, only an Aussie will say it to your face) try adjusting your accent to sound Canadian........

Kble
Sure, why wouldn't we? Regardless of political beliefs, the two cultures seem to get along really well. I think in the main Australians are pretty tolerant but of course there are bound to be some who are knobs. I'm Australian and I have a few American friends who I met whilst overseas and we've never really experienced any sort of cultural barrier and the differences we do notice are usually pretty funny.

backpacka
Aussies do like Americans.

Lets face it, we are very similar countries. Same language, similar social problems etc.

Most Australians respect people who are respectful towards them. So thats the key.

stocksaloon
A 1 on 1 I would probably think you were a really nice person but over al l,,,no we dont like Yanks,,you are selfcentered,,bigoted,,loudmouthed selfrightious ,,nasty people ..you think the world just consists of your country,,well I got news,,,IT DONT...

OK I am an Aussie living in the USA, I love Americans!! No one will be rude (unless your rude to them!) but you do need to have a sense of humour, Australian's are mistaken as racist but I think that it is more just our humour. We don't care what your background is, where you come from, just so long as you are nice!! That is the same for everyone every where though. But move there, you will love it. I can't wait to get back there!!

We like Americans, of course we do. We don't treat an entire race the same, in other words if you're a nice person people will be nice to you. Exactly the same as it would be in your own city.

However...we DON'T like George Bush - and that has turned people slightly against Americans. Having said that, most people can differenciate between government policies and the people (and we've learned how to do that because we hate our own Prime Minister, little Johnny hoWARd).

To sum up....you'll be very, very welcome to come here. Come on down :-)

death_cab_driver_5005
my sister just got back from there recetnyl shes 22 she was treated very well by everyone and had only a small amuont of prejiduce only in very large cities where tis to be expected regardless

They like our money. Our President has turned most of the world against us. Even so, I think that Australia still considers us an ally.
I think that over all, you'll be treated with respect..

hotteenick
I am Australian and I love Americans.

Most Australians are very anti-American...... this is mostly due to jealousy.

Dont move to Australia the U.S. is so much better. Take it from someone who has lived in both Australia and the U.S.

You are so blessed that you are able to live in America.
