I don't think some of the things you have said are pertinent or truthful, particularly about the "drinking problem" of some sectors of the community. I lived in Townsville and worked at the "crap" casino and found the town to be pleasant enough. The problem drunkards were generally soldiers from Lavarack, country boys down for the football or station workers in town for the weekend.
Cairns might have more to offer its tourists but I think your negative generalisations about Townsville and its inhabitants are misguided.

you do realise theyre both about 16 hours apart??????????

townsville is great but a tad isolated, brisbane is oz most beautiful city (in my eyes) and being minutes from all the wonders of the sunshine coast id got there rather than townsville.........

Umm Townsville is a LONG way north from Brisbane. I hope I am just reading your question wrong and that you don't think they are close.

I don't know much about Townsville except that the Esplanade is apparently very nice.

I am a Brisbanite and you can do a lot by basing yourself here. There are a lot of theme parks about 30 minutes drive south which you should go to if you like that kinf od thing. Also if you head north to the Sunshine Coast, Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo is about 45 minutes away.

In Brisbane itself you should check out the Southbank Parklands, especially on a weekend when they have markets on.

You could go abseiling off the Kangaroo point Cliffs overlooking the city or climb the Storey Bridge. Take a cruise up the river on The River Queen which is a paddle boat and you will get a history lesson about the river.

The City Sights tour is a bus ride which takes you around the main CBD sights - very good for tourists to get their bearings.

Fortitude Valley is the place to be for nightlife at the moment. There is a club there for every taste but I recommend checking out Family nightclub. Very cool!

Dont bother with Townsville...Cairns has a much better variety of things. Cairns is about four hours drive north from Townsville. It has more reef accessibility. Also the rain forest, including the World Heritage Rainforest...the Daintree. We have a few crocodile farms, the best one being Hartleys Creek Crocodile Farm. I have been to most of the crocodile parks around Australia and this one is the best by far...Steve's Australia Zoo was garbage. Cairns is beautiful...we have a beautiful waterfront right in the city. Great shopping, restaurants and just facilities in general for tourists. Great backpacker or cheap accomodation...also a very large long-term tourist community.

Anyone who lives in Cairns pretty much never goes to Townsville unless we have to. The only thing that Townsville does have is that its the home of the North Queensland Cowboys. Other than that...Townsville is very dry. Its just a town built around the centre of a red hill. There is a huge problem with drunk and disorderly conduct of many people, mostly Aboriginals. The casino is crap...the waterfront is not pretty at all.

I could go on and on and on about this, but just check out "Far North Queensland" in a Yahoo search and you wont see much of Townsville...just Cairns, Port Douglas, The Tablelands and The Daintree.
