There is a town called Naval Base near Fremantle and the naval base is called HMAS Sterling which is mostly for submarines.
This is one of many naval bases in Australia.

HMAS Stirling also known as FLEET BASE WEST was commissioned on 28 July 1978, and is the largest base in the Royal Australian Navy and is home to 2300 service personnel. It is located on the south eastern section of Garden Island 15 Km south of Fremantle.

It is capable of supporting half the RAN fleet and is located on the shores of Careening Bay, on the south eastern section of Garden Island, facing Cockburn Sound south of the Port of Fremantle.

11 Fleet units are based there, including the first of Australia's ANZAC-class frigates, HMAS Anzac. Three guided-missile frigates, HMAS Adelaide, Canberra and Darwin are also based there along with the first three of Australia's new Collins-class submarines, HMAS Collins, Farncomb and Waller.

HMAS Stirling is also the Headquarters of the Australian Submarine Squadron with all submarine training being carried out in the Navy's large Submarine Systems and Training Centre.

Other ships based at Garden Island are the replenishment oiler HMAS Westralia, and the busy patrol boats HMAS Bunbury and HMAS Geraldton. Australian Clearance Diving Team Four is also based at HMAS Stirling. Still expanding within its existing perimeters.

Footnote: It is most confusing that The Royal Australian Navy's two main bases for Major Fleet Units are both located at places called Garden Island. HMAS Kuttabul, Fleet Base East, Garden Island, Sydney, New South Wales and at HMAS Stirling,Fleet Base West, HMAS Stirling, Garden Island, Western Australia.

The official RAN website with the location of all RAN bases is at: http://www.navy.gov.au/fleet/map.html

I'm pretty sure there is. Australia does, after all, have a navy.

By the way, what do New Zealanders think of being lumped in with Australia for a category??
