Does anyone on here live in Australia?

We have been considering emigrating for while and have these enquiries:

1.Is there any discrimination from Australians towards British emigrators as a family member moved there and was treated differently for bing English.

2.Are there many big spiders around Gold Coast, Queensland?

3.What sort of temperatures do you expect in different season?
Additional Details
well ren't you clever? but in case you hadn't noticed Americans come on here nd there is a section clearly labelled AUSTRALIA!!

Why are non-Australian people are answering a question clearly classified as travel-Australia. Bored or whatever their name is should get their facts straight as the classification means... travel/being in Australia.. and of course would appear in all of the yahoo zones.

I do not live on the GCoast but can comment.

1. there is no discrimination on the whole. In any group you will get the odd DHead but you shouldnt have any problems unless you are unlucky enought o run into one. I will say though the one thing that will get you grief is "whinging" about how good it was back home. Aussies reckon that its a great country and if people dont like it then they can shut up and go back where they come from. We like people who get on with life and make the most of they have. Its ok to not to like something for a genuine reason ( ie not used to the heat and think its too hot) but not to continually run something down when they could go somewhere else and avoid whatever it is they dont like. I used to have a very good (Pommy) friend who could laugh at themselves like Aussies do and actually used to call themselves a Pom. They used to comment that they can understand why we get pssd off with the whinging because if back home is so good.. stop whinging and go back there. I think her attitude explains how we see things and the whinging as already said is one thing that will cause some verbal agro.

2. Spiders.. well there are lots of spiders but the GCoast doesnt have things like funnel webs, redbacks and so on lurking under everything. You will however see Huntsmen most people refer to them as triantulas and they are really common around the entire country. I have seen them here with the thorax (bit the legs stick out of) at least 3 cm across and more than 20cm across the leg span but most are smaller as they look frightening and unfortunatley people tend to kill the ones that they see. Hunstmen are really useful because they eat insects and so on. and like most things will run away from you. They do have huge fangs but are not poisonous. It is possible to pick one up if you know what you are doing but those fangs can draw blood I volunteer to catch them for my friends and move them and believe me I found out how hard they bite practising how to pick them up. A local school had some pet ones reared in a (dry) fish tank that had become used to humans and being handled, you could even lightely stoke them and they would just sit on yuor hand.. so in reality they are nothing to be frightened of.

3. Temperatures will vary with occaisonal max summer temperatures up to mid 40's but generally in the mid to high 30's. Winter would probably be similar to English summer temperatures. The Gold coast is ok but head north to Brisbane and the Humidity climbs.. its almost like breathing water and makes the heat even more unbearable but you shouldnt have that problem on the GCoast.

I live in Tassie which is very similar to England/Ireland but liek to visit Cairns. Personally I would reccomend you emigrate during the english summer as you would be coming to similar temperatures here and and have time to adjust to the increasing temperatures through spring into summer.

I have lived in the Gold Coast for two years between 2001 and 2003, my thoughts below.

1. No there are no discriminations towards the English. The queenslanders are a great bunch and will make jokes that sometimes can be perceived bordering on a racism but they are not racist people by nature. Gold Coast is a very touristy area with heaps of Scandinavians and Japanese.

2. Yes, there are spiders on the GC. The big spiders u will find can be up to as big as your palm and and are called huntsmen. They look scary and are generally harmless, but i have heard that they do pack a bite.

3. The weather in the Gold Coast can get up to 40 deg in summer (during Christmas) but you generally get a breeze as its coastal so its bearable unlike Brisbane.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone on here live in Australia?
Before the "take over" there were, but just a few now.
You have lots to learn yet about Australia, hope you have broad shoulders.

Elizabeth
Yes, we are on the world wide web so you'll get answers from people worldwide (even if they don't have a clue about the correct answer).

I live in Australia, I hope I can help you with a little information.

1. There's not much discrimination towards the British, except during the cricket season. :-)

2. Yes, we do have spiders of all sizes.
They're not a major problem but a lot of Australians are freaked out by them too.
I'm one of the lucky ones who isn't worried by them, my pet hate is snakes.
Only time you see a snake is at the zoo usually.

3. Gold Coast Weather & Climate.
http://www.gold-coast.net/goldcoast/weather.html

The Gold Coast has a sub-tropical climate with plenty of sunshine year round (in fact an average of 300 days a year).

Summer temperatures range from 19 to 29 degrees Celsius (66 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit).

Winter temperatures range from an average of 9 to 21 degrees Celsius (48 to 69 degrees Fahrenheit) - it's no wonder the Gold Coast is Australia's favourite playground.

To answer your questions from an Australian member:

1) There is discrimination world wide, so why should Australia be any different?

2) Yes, we do have big spiders called Funnel Web's but you do find them more down towards Sydney NSW way. You don't have to worry too much about them as they're probably more scared of you.

3) Australia is one of the driest countries in the world. Our winter season is not really cold but our summer season can very hot and dry depending on where you live in Australia. As for rain, I am afraid to say there isn't much of that either.

I wish you well if you do decide to emigrate as its a truly beautiful multicultural lifestyle here.

yep! i live i australia, but i live in melbourne, so not really sure bout the weather in queensland or spiders there. we get a couple of hairy spiders in our house, but nuthing poisonous...

the weather is ok. gets really dry during the summer. the highest temp during the summer is prob bout 44 degree c, but thats not everyday. i think average is 29/30 in summer. it doesnt get too cold here, which is good, i hate cold weather! doesnt snow where i live.... rains alot in winter though...

i dont know about discrimination against british ppl, i know lots of ppl from england and they seem to get along fine with ppl here, i mean i've got nuthin againt english ppl but then im not racist or anything and like ppl from any background.

really rude ppl can be found anywhere, so there would prob. be a couple of ppl who dont like british emigrators, but its not jus australians, those ppl can be found in any country! i dont think the majority of australian have anything against british emigrators, but i dont know everyone, so cant really be 100% on that.

i really hope you have a great experience in australia and good luck to you!

I used to live in Australia. Now in UK. I lived in Perth not the Gold Coast, but the spiders aren't really a problem you have fly screens on all your windows and doors.
I never had any discrimination but us Brits were quite common in Perth. They laugh at ya and call u pommies but its more of an affectionate thing really. I dont consider that as discriminating but it depends on how sensitive u are.
Temps in the Summer went up to 45 degrees and down to 5 degrees in Winter. We didn't have snow but it got really windy (cyclones) and a lot of heavy rain during Winter we never had central heating but we had pot belly stoves it did get really cold at night.

Hi :) I'm from Australia, live in Sydney - I lived in London for four years.
I would agree with the above answers in that you will not be discriminated against for being English - only if you go on and on about how much better things are at home. Most Aussies have grown up with the whole banter between Australia and England, which is encouraged through sport etc...but mostly you'll find it to be light hearted - and you'll have to get used to being called a Pommie - but it is not meant in an offensive way - it's just a term that's been around in Oz since forever and we all use it. (same way you say "Ozzies") There are many English people living in Australia as you probably know - so you're not going to be treated differently, we're all used to it. As I had to when I moved to England, just learn to not compare how much better/faster/cheaper things are "at home" and you'll make friends quickly.

There are big spiders around in QLD (I grew up there) - but have you heard the saying "they're more scared of you than you are of them?" - if you leave them well alone, they will leave you alone. Huntsmen are good for the eco systems - they are a bit scary to see, but just walk in the other direction! Nothing at all to be scared of.

Different seasons bring different tempurates - and in QLD you can expect LOADS of sun- it is after all called "The Sunshine State" - it will be very, very hot in Summer (that's why EVERYTHING is air conditioned, and you will get yourself into somewhere cool - or to the beach) - and cold in Winter, though nothing at all compared to the British winter. (think November temperatures.) If you have fair skin - I'd recommend getting familiar very quickly with a high quality sunscreen living in QLD - it is notorious for it's harsh midday sun.

I thought that the above answer suggesting moving during your Summer was quite a good one - I moved to England during Aussie Summer/England Winter and found it such a shock! When I came back, I moved at the end of England "summer" - (though there wasn't much of one this year!) - and have found it easier to "ease into" the heat.

I really hope you have a good time in Australia - and can you bring some Haribos Starmix! :) I miss them ;)

Hi! I live in Melbourne but I'm originally from Queensland.

1. Poms only get treated differently if they whinge too much about living conditions here and fail to adjust to the Australian way of life. Obviously, most British migrants do adapt well, as we are mostly descended from Brits and/or Irish people to begin with!

Australians are egalitarian and don't like anyone to consider themselves superior, so Poms have to accept that about Australia or they won't be happy here. Some Brits take the view that Australia is still a British colony and that they should get special treatment, but they have to accept that we are independent of the mother country now, have our own culture and way of life, and everyone is on the same level in Australian society.

The country is not going to change to suit you: you will have to change to suit the country.

Having said all that, most migrants from all places adore Australia and are very grateful to be allowed to stay! They love the sunny weather, the relaxed way of life, the friendly people, and the high standard of living.

2. The Gold Coast, like most parts of Queensland, has a sub-tropical climate, so there is plenty of wildlife, including spiders. But they really shouldn't be a problem! The heavy traffic and the shortage of water will surely cause more stress than the spiders.... The population of the south-east corner of Queensland, including Brisbane and its environs, is growing extremely rapidly, and demand for resources of all kinds is outstripping supply.

3. On the Gold Coast, winters [May, June, July, August] are very mild by British standards, and "summers" are quite humid and very hot, over 30 degrees Celsius, starting in October if not earlier. Winter temperatures get down to around 10 degrees at night, but daytimes often get up to 25.

Melbourne temperatures vary more widely, but are still much milder than British temps: in winter it rarely gets down below zero and daytimes temps are around 12-15. Spring [Sept-November] is very variable but yesterday it got up to 38 degrees! Summers are very hot and dry, although still quite changeable, with short-lived cool spells. Autumn in Melbourne is delightful: still warm and dry, but much cooler at night [you can sleep!] with golden sunshine and blue skies most of the time... (You can tell I prefer Melbourne's climate!)

It amazes me how foreigners see Australia as some creature-ridden wilderness with strange British hating people.

sam
i have never come across anyone who had a problem with english people. there are many coultures here in aus but one of the best is english.
yes there are spiders around not overbearing amounts though the biggest i have seen is about the size of a tennis ball, though i have yet to see a spider at the gold coast
and winter is freezing but you would be used to that summer is bad it can reach 40 degrees sometimes but you will climatise eventually if i were you i'd move here in a different season not in the middle of summer which is between about december and march i think
