Does everyone over seas think that Australians all talk like Crocadile dundee or Steve Irwin?

It just annoys me sometimes, I mean I am proud to be aussie, but when I hear those over exaggerated accents it doesn't represent our true accent. In all american shows if an aussie comes on it's like "Put another shrimp on the barbie" true we say barbe but no one grills shrimp hehe ... So I guess my question is, have you ever met an australian and thought we do sound like that? Or is it a little bit different... I think it is and I'm aussie. Thanks
Additional Details
I was born in the country and I don't live in a city... I understand that we have broad accents but I find it hard to believe that anyone talks like the man in crocadile dundee... I'm yet to travel west so I have only heard the different eastern accents

I hope people overseas don't think everyone here speaks like the two men mentioned.

But obviously, you don't get out of the city and into country towns very often.

Many, many Aussies speak with a broad accent and use a tremendous amount of Aussie slang.
You just don't see or hear them in the cities.
The majority of bushies stay as far away from the city as is humanly possible.

Edit: I think you'll find that people who knew Steve Irwin, prior to his becoming an international star, will tell you he was always hyper-active and spoke in a very Australian way. Although some find it unbelievable he didn't change much over the years. He was a "one-of-a-kind" style of person.
As far as Paul Hogan aka Crocodile Dundee goes, he was reasonably ok when he first started out but over the years became a caricature of the average Australian.

i guess my answer to this is americans love tacky cliches and always will.it's like the equivalent of the country boy accent there will always be the "howdy ya'll" character somewhere.i feel for you.some aussie (and kiwi) accents are just beautiful!

we have an Aussie weatherperson here in Seattle and people think she's a Southern/ Bostonian??? We love the accent.....

Si! se puede!!!

I never really thought about it, but no I didn't ever assume.

Everyone sounds different depending where they come from. People in New York don't sound like the people here in Tennessee, and go a little further into Tennessee where you are out of Memphis and most everyone has a southern accent. Same way with people from Britain and such. They sound different depending on where you come from. (:

Mel
In movies like Crocodile Dundee and Steve Irwin, the accent is rather put on and over top. It is still an Australian accent but over exagerated to entertainment.

You may find out country folk with really strong accents, but a lot of the slang is fake.

I live in Coffs Harbour and most of the blokes here sound like that. Okay, they don't yell "Crikey" while jumping on a crocodile, although they might do if we had any crocs here :) But their accents ... yeah mate, deffo. And yes, we do grill prawns sometimes although personally I prefer them with a little seafood sauce before tucking into the barbie'd sangers!

I love my harley
I have worked with many aussies at the ski resort I work at and they all sound like that.

That's like saying, ALL Americans have a southern accent.

The only people that sound like Steve Irwin are the ones from the countryside and the outback.

I lived in the States for six years. The first time I met my postie, I said, G'day to him....he was bowled over, as he thought only Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee spoke like that.

For the most part though, most Americans mistook me for being British...

What's wrong with it ?
