yes it does snow in Australia, In the high country it's gets very cold and snows, Australia also has some of the best snow fields in the world.
It evens snows at under 500 meters in winter.

Yea it snows in some parts of Australia mainly down south in VIC and N.S.W it has snowed once that I know of in QLD and it does get rather cold and as far as rain goes we seem to get abit of rain here in QLD on the coast. |

I live in Canberra and yes in the winters it can get very cold and rain sometimes. Yes, beileve it or not, there is snow in Australia. In Thredbo and a ski resort called Perieher Blue. |

It does snow in the highlands around the New South Wales / Victorian boarder and sometimes in places like a few mountains in Hobart and occasionally other places.
Otherwise winter minimums range from -1 or -2 to nearly 20 degrees (all temps in celsius). Maximums go from about 10 degrees to over 30.
Rain varies depending on the region.
For example down around Victoria and South Australia they generally get their rain more in the winter months and are drier in summer. It's why they can get bad bushfires, the place dries out in the hot months.
Brisbane and north along the coast and Cape York get most of their rain starting to get heavier in spring and easing back going into winter. |

In Australia we have two regions with designed snow fields, one around Mt Buller in Victoria and the other Thredbo in NSW. These snow fields generally operate June - October but can vary if the weather allows.
Other places high in the mountains can experience some snow fall but not enough to skiing purposes. The occasional cold snap can bring bizarre weather and snow in unexpected places though this is rare.
In most cities winter is comfortable, QLD have warm weather all year round and inland and northern Aus are still in the 30C range through winter. Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Perth all have mild winters comfortable enough for jeans and a tshirt throughout the day but cold at night. Melbourne have a weird weather pattern and often experience many seasons within one day, their nights are a lot colder then the other states and layering your clothes is the best option.
In the north the summer months are their tropical weather where they have torrential rains and some off shore cyclones. The southern states also tend to experience some rain throughout the summer. Of late June and August have been out wettest months.
This will give you a rough guide: http://www.sydney.com.au/weather.htm Most of the southern states have very similar weather though Perth tend to experience the most heat waves. |

No wonder the rest of the world has so many misconceptions about Australia, there are Aussies that don't even know we get snow...? Maybe they're the ones that have given people the impression that we all live in the outback and wrestle crocs! |

Australia is a large country and has different weather conditions in different places.
The top end is in the tropics so it is tropical weather and will not snow there. The rain will bucket down in typhoon season.
Tasmania is so far south that it's weather is closer to British weather.
The interior has mostly a desert rainfall or not much above desert rainfall. I used to live in Balranald, about 900 kilometres west of Sydney. Because we were in the state of NSW but we watched television from Victoria, we never got weather details about Balaranald. Well that is not quite true, my Aunt would ring up and say we had the hottest temperature again. She knew because she saw it on TV. Anyway, we decided we would take our own rainfall readings. So, we bought a weather gauge one July. It didn't rain until January! Another memory from Balaranald is the heat. I was heading off to a barbecue one evening about 5pm. As I passed the thermometer in the shade under the verandah, I noticed it was 48 degrees celcius (about 118 farenheit). This of course is not surprising as Balaranald is only 130 kilometres from Hay which is the second hotest place in the world, on average, behind Death valley in the USA.
The area along the great dividing range on the east coast of Australia, stretching from just south of Canberra down to near Melbourne is where most of the snow can be found. I have been told but am unable to confirm that for a single country, Australia has the largest snow fields in the world.
The first poster says he lives in Canberra and it is cold in winter. I used to live in Canberra too. Minus 4 degrees celcius or so every morning. I would have to pour warm water over the windscreen to get the ice off so I could see to drive. I went camping near Canberra one time during winter. The creek froze over during the night. Found out later it had been minus 10 degrees celcius while we were camping.
