Dead Day Afternoon

Does it ever snow in Brisbane?

Somebody told me the north part of Australia is the hottest part of the country, especially in Queensland. Is this true?

Not only does it NEVER snow in Brisbane because it's too far north and therefore much too warm for snow, but it's another 2400 km (1476 miles) from there to the northernmost tip of Australia and it keeps on getting hotter as you go north.

I don't think redhzkingswood lives in Brisbane as it isn't as hot here as he says. Over 35°C days are uncommon and we rarely get more than 1 or 2 on end when they do happen.

No Snow, but some areas get a covering of hale, which looks like snow.

I live 35km East of Brisbane CBD, and last summer; Dec 2007 to Feb 2008, we had 21 days out of 92 where the maximum temp was recorded over 30°C.
The other 71 days never exceeded 30°C.
The highest was 33.4°C except for 23rd Feb when it hit 40.2°C.

I live in Brisbane. It has NEVER snowed, I can assure you. I'm not so sure about "Hottest Part of Country" bit.

Michaela!
The north part of the country isn't Brisbane... and no it doesn't snow, but is can get cold. They were probably talking about Cairns or Cape York- It doesn't snow there either it is to close to the equator.

If you look at a map of Australia you'll see that the Tropic of Capricorn runs right through the top of Australia, and that means the climate in that part of the country is tropical!

Brisbane is considered sub-tropical, so while the climate is generally warm, it's not quite as hot as the Far North but is too warm for snow in winter. The average in Brisbane for the hottest summer months of Jan/Feb is 29C, only 2 or 3 degrees cooler than Cairns in Far North Qld.

About 125kms inland from Brisbane is Toowoomba which is on the high Tablelands. This area does get quite cold in winter and snow, although rare, has been seen.

kismet
It doesn't snow in Brisbane but it does experience hail storms occasionally.
The hottest part of Australia I believe is Marble Bar in Western Australia? I heard it's so hot you can fry an egg on a rock.

Power Flower
I remember about 25 years ago we had a cold snap and it was reported on the radio that a few flakes of snow were seen from the top of the Lennons building, they didn't make it to the ground. It was a once in a lifetime occurrence.

nope, probably just the early morning frost is as close as we get

It may have snowed when Australia was part of Gondwanaland, but not in the past million or so years.

it's not quite the hottest part, the Northern Territory and West Australia are hotter, but it's still usually over the 35c mark most days, and even in winter in the mid 20s.
Brisbane is not very far north compared with the rest of Qld. it's only about half way up the Australian coast so is not really tropical, but it can get very hot and wet in the summer

hibo
hell yes! omg, it's almost as hot as palm springs. if you've been, you'd know.
