I just went and flushed my toilet, and the water went down in a clockwise direction.
I considered going and asking my neighbours which direction their toilets flushed in, but it reminded me too much of an episode of The Simpsons, and decided against it.

special-chemical-x
Old wives tale.

The direction of vortice is mostly controlled by the bowl of the toilet and piping rather than the magnetic field of the earth.

Bob
no, it goes down the drain just like here

js
hey i live in australia and i just went and flushed the toliet to look lol and it flushes just down like it doesn't go any particular way lol

hope that helps?

Of course not

No, here in Oz the toilet flushes in the correct direction its when you get to America you find mass dunny confusion.

oliviaaa
i always wondered that too. but i dont think its true. it just depends on which way the toilets jets push the water.

yep, its just cause its in the southern hemisphere, and we are in the northern (assuming you live in the northern hem) its just like why its winter there when its summer here.

No it doesn't.

Huge systems like ocean currents and high level winds tend to rotate in different directions due to the coriolis effect. Cyclones which are our damaging low pressure systems, rotate in a clockwise direction in the Southern hemisphere, whereas northern hemisphere low pressure systems (hurricanes and typhoons), rotate anti-clockwise.

Water rotation in small things like toilets and bathtubs is determined by the shape of the vessel and the entry point of the water.

Yes. Instead of going down the drain we have a sort of fountain effect. Most unpleasant. We should do something about it.

Actually, water in a toilet bowl is so turbulent that the turbulence overwhelms any possibility of the extremely weak coriolis force having any effect.

Of course North American toilets have a lot more water in the bowl after flushing. That is a real difference.

Don't worry, It's a fair question. No they don't flush the other way. However your toilets are so different to ours. I went to the US last year and loved it (Didn't want to come home). The first time I went to the dunny I looked at it and thought that it was broken as it was full of water. I looked at it for a minute or two and they flushed it to see what happened (Our toilets are not full of water like yours), and surprise surprise, the dunny sucked all the water out and filled back up. I thought "Wow". LOL. And it also took me some time to work out your showers, we have two handles for the shower and two handles for the bath outlet. You only have one in the middle and a little knob for the bath, well that took some experimenting too, lol. Everything was different, lol.

Coriolis effect yahoo it

No it does not, toilets are the same. That saying came about because people in Australia drive on the other side of the rode. A Australian toilet flushes the same, the the toilet handle is on the left to flushes to the left.

Depends where your from....but the northern hemisphere toilets do flush different to the southern hemisphere. Why this happens I don't remember, but I did learn this in school.

It has to do with the coriolis effect (look it up): You live in Northern Hemisphere while Aust. is in the southern hemisphere

aussie boy
